“Lacy?”

She lifted her eyes to his. “Your beard is soft.”

He captured her hand in his to stop the teasing touch. “You ready to go home?”

Her eyes went in and out of focus before she nodded. “I’m sleepy.”

“I know, little bird, but we need to make it to the apartment before you pass out.” He stood and helped her up with him.

“I’ve never passed out before.” She leaned heavily into him as they made their way to the door. “Am I drunk?”

“Yes.” Jonah opened the door and never released her arm as they stepped to the curb to find a ride. He pulled out his phone to open the app.

Lacy leaned into him with her nose pressed to his shirt. “You smell nice.”

“Thanks, you do too.” Peaches. He rested one arm around her waist to keep her close. She kept listing to one side and if he didn’t hold her, she’d end up on the ground. He also liked the way she felt pressed against him, but she was way too drunk for anything more than leaning on him tonight. Thankfully.

“Ocean air,” she sighed. Her fingers grasped his belt loops.

The driver was only two minutes away. Jonah put his phone in his pocket and draped his arms around Lacy’s waist while she leaned against him.

“Did you have fun?” he asked, trying to keep her focusing on words rather than their closeness. He didn’t want her to feel self-conscious, but she also needed him to hold her up. Not that he minded holding her.

“I don’t think I should do shots again.” Lacy looked up at him. Her hands pressed lightly against his chest.

“Why not?”

“Because I feel woozy and— Your chest is really solid, like rock hard.” Her eyes drifted down to his chest where her fingers pressed into his pecs. “Have you felt your chest?”

“You can lay down when we get home.”

“Both of us?” She glanced up at him with a sly look in her eyes.

He raised an eyebrow at her and she giggled. The sound tugged at his heart.

The car pulled up. At last.

“This is us.” He managed to get drunk Lacy into the car and seat belted with no problems.

“That your girlfriend?” the driver asked, looking over Lacy in the rearview mirror.

Jonah nodded. Not liking the way this guy looked at her. Jonah had stopped taking shots long before Lacy did, knowing it would be on him to get her home safely. He was completely sober.

“Cool.” The driver pulled away from the curb. Maybe the guy was just looking out for the drunk girl. Maybe he had hoped to hit on the drunk girl.

Lacy didn’t seem to notice the exchange and stared out the window on the ride home. When they pulled up to the apartment building, Jonah helped Lacy out of the seatbelt and onto the curb.

“Thanks,” he said as he closed the door on the guy and watched him take off.

“Did you tell him I was your girlfriend?”

Jonah looked down at Lacy’s wide eyes. “You are a girl and my friend. . . .”

“I’m your friend.” She got this aww look on her face. She started to reach for his beard again, but he captured her hand. She shook his hand with hers. “You said I’m your friend. You like me.”

He shook his head. “Come on, let’s get you into bed.”

“Mr. Sinclair, I’m not that kind of girl.” Her goofy grin and chuckle spoiled the insulted look. “Though you are that kind of guy. Logan’s that kind of guy too. Maybe I should be that kind of girl. What do you think?”
