“I think we should get into the building.” Jonah got her through the front door and into the elevator. She slumped against the elevator wall and her eyes started to close.

“Nope, not time to sleep yet, little bird.” He tugged her against him and rubbed her arms to try to keep her awake.

“Little bird,” she chuckled. “You are so weird. You make me feel weird too.”

“How so?” He glanced down at her. She drew a circle on his chest with her fingertip.

“Like a storm inside. Like sexually,” she whispered loudly. She glanced up at him, her pretty brown eyes blank. “What are we talking about?”

Fuck, this woman would kill him. He couldn’t go there with her. He shook his head. “I have no idea.”

“Good. Me either.” Her grin was sloppy as she leaned into him again.

The elevator arrived on their floor and he shuffled her down to their door. Finally, they walked into their apartment.

“I’m home,” she yelled and stumbled toward the couch.

Jonah locked up and got a couple of bottles of water from the refrigerator. “You hungry?”

“Yes, I am,” she replied in a low voice.

“Are you mocking me?”

She tipped over on the couch, laughing. “You growl words. How does someone growl words?”

Stifling a grin, he shook his head and grabbed some crackers and cheese before heading to the couch. He sat next to her and gave her a bottle of water after removing the lid. She’d kicked off her shoes beside the chair. Her forehead crinkled like she was thinking hard about something. He wanted to reach over and smooth the lines.

“Do you think I’m cute?” She drank some of the water and reached for a cracker.

“I’d say more annoying than cute, currently.” He grinned as she started to tip to one side. He reached out to steady her and her gaze fell on his hand.

“It’s like you’re on fire. I like it too much.” Her words were soft. But then she pouted at him and said, “You don’t think I’m cute. Logan thinks I’m cute.”

“Yes, you are cute and a little funny when you are drunk.” Jonah didn’t really want to talk about Logan. Her mind wasn’t exactly firing on all cylinders at the moment, hopping from topic to topic.

“Am I sexy?” Her wide brown eyes lifted to his, her hand landed on his chest, and he forgot to breathe.

“What do you think?” He pushed out around the sudden frog in his throat. Hell yeah, she was, but she was too drunk right now. He couldn’t admit to her what he wanted to do to her. Even if he didn’t think Logan was the right guy for her, somewhere out there was a guy who would be everything a woman like Lacy needed. Stable, loving, invested. And that wasn’t Jonah.

“I think everyone thinks I’m cute, but no one thinks I’m sexy. I need to flirt more.” She set down the water. She pushed her hair from her face, gathering it in a ponytail before letting it fall down. “Logan isn’t my first crush to call me cute.”

“Oh?” Again with Logan. The guy barely gave her the time of day. Jonah didn’t understand what she saw in him. He needed her to eat or she’d end up sick. Jonah handed her another cracker. She took it and used it as a prop for her speech.

“In college, I met Chet. He was in a fraternity, and holy crap was he gorgeous. Like so gorgeous.” She waved the cracker in his face and sighed. “I could see us together after just meeting him once. He picked up my ID card that fell in the quad. Like destiny, you know?”

“You don’t have to tell me this.” Jonah really didn’t want to know. He already wanted to deck Logan at times. Now he’d have it in for guys named Chet. Chet was a douchebag name anyway.

“I want to tell you.” She straightened, saw the cracker in her hand, and ate it. “I was at one of the frat’s parties. He called me cute. See, Chet liked me back. Which was a first for me. My crushes never liked me back and my friends always told me that, but Chet liked me back. He started hanging out with me a lot. He kissed me. Me!”

“Okay.” Hopefully she would lose her train of thought.

She sighed and looked off. “Chet said we had something real and so we slept together. I mean sex. We had sex. But then it hadn’t been real at all. The sex was, but he just wanted to sleep with me. Another notch for him. So I’m okay with going slow with Logan to really figure out if he likes me, but I can’t figure out if he likes me. Do you know what I mean?”

Jonah nodded. He really wanted to find that Chet guy and kick his ass.

“Are you mad at me?” She frowned up at him.

“No.”
