The door opened to the apartment and Lacy thought she’d been prepared to see Jonah again.

Nothing could prepare her for the giant that would be sleeping across the hall from her. He had to be well over six feet tall. His black T-shirt and jeans clung to his lean, solid build. His dark blonde hair was buzzcut except on the top where it was long and fell over his blue eyes. He had a well trimmed beard, a few shades darker than his hair with just a hint of red in it.

She accidentally made eye contact with Jonah again. Little sparks lit along her spine. She dropped her gaze and noticed he carried a suitcase and a guitar case. Guitar? Maybe he had a hobby or maybe he was a musician? Was that why he was subletting?

“Do you play?” The words were out of Lacy’s mouth before she could even think to stop them. She couldn’t help herself. He would be living with them, after all. They should get to know each other a little bit. Right?

He glanced over at her as he passed behind the couch. His eyes narrowed as if her question vexed him but she shrugged. He looked away.

She wasn’t surprised. Most men didn’t give her a second glance. Overall, she was unremarkable, especially when next to her roommates. It really didn’t bother her anymore. Guys like Jonah were definitely after a hot chick. She didn’t have the bra size to attract a guy like him. Not that she wanted to attract him.

Besides, she didn’t do attitude. And she had Logan.

Gah, she needed to focus.

“What? Just trying to be friendly,” Lacy said with a forced smile.

Sophie snickered next to her.

He gave Lacy a brief nod before heading into the bedroom across from hers. Whether that nod was an acknowledgement of just trying to be friendly or affirmation of playing the guitar, Lacy wasn’t sure she’d ever find out.

“This is going to be fun,” Lacy muttered as the door shut behind him.

Jonah didn’t make an appearance for the rest of the evening. After an hour, Lacy had finally relaxed when Sophie bid her goodnight before slipping off to bed. Lacy remained on the couch, vegging out toHigh School Musicalwhile texting with Beth.

Sweet uncomplicated high school romance. Her favorite drug of choice.

You really should give up on Logan, Beth texted. She’d filled Beth in on the new roommate. Beth had been interested, but Lacy knew it would only be a matter of time before Beth circled back to the Logan conversation. The same song and dance Lacy had heard for the past ten years.

Beth had Lacy’s best interests at heart and just didn’t want her to get hurt. After all, when the crush either exploded or fizzled it was Beth who helped Lacy pick up the pieces.

Lacy leaned back, stretching her spine. Always a different guy, but the same argument. It started Freshman year of high school when Lacy had been in love with the star quarterback, Jack. Who, by the way, had been seriously hot, but only went out with cheerleaders. However, one time in the hallway between classes, Lacy had dropped a pen and he’d picked it up and handed it to her. He’d even smiled at her. Gah, that smile. She’d been a goner after that. She’d spent two years being hopelessly in love with the guy until he went off to college. She’d even tried out for cheerleading, so she’d be perfect for him. She didn’t make the team but she’d tried, for him.

This time, though, she might actually have a shot. Why should I give up? It’s only been six months. He’s gorgeous and nice. We work together. There’s potential.

Overall, she didn’t have the best track record with guys. Every guy she’d wanted hadn’t exactly been banging down her door, so she really hadn’t had a relationship. She’d never even had a guy friend before. Wanting to remain and appear available for her crushes, she hadn’t really looked at other guys.

Her overprotective brothers, of whom she had too many, hadn’t even given her any real-world knowledge about guys. Besides to stay away from guys. She had no idea how to attract or keep men.

Her phone dinged with Beth’s text.Because it’s not going to happen. It never does. You pin all your hopes and dreams to a guy who is totally unattainable.

Beth sent another.Okay, you don’t want to give up. Fine. Stop waiting and make it happen!

Lacy’s heart raced. Like ask him out? She couldn’t just ask him out. The air stuck in her lungs. What if he wasn’t attracted to her? How awkward would that make the office? Every day having to see him after he rejected her. No, thank you. Besides she wanted him to make the first move. She’d been bold once and it had backfired horribly.

She shook her head. She texted,I can’t just ask him out.

Why not?

I want to make sure he wants to want me.

The three little dots appeared on her screen and then went away. Lacy slouched down farther into the couch. A whole musical number later, Beth finally responded.

Fine. Make a plan then. Talk to the man and see if you guys even have anything in common besides the fact he’s hot and you think he’s nice.

Flirt. Make actual eye contact and smile. Dress in a way that he’ll notice you.

Find a way to spend time with him outside of work, even if it’s not a date.
