Something teased at her brain. Something Logan said. “Did he. . . .” What was it? “He said I was cute.”

“Like a puppy.” Jonah’s voice deepened a little and she shot him a look.

She felt the burn of anger before she realized, “Did he say I was like a little sister?”

Jonah nodded, watching her intently.

She finished her coffee and held out her mug for more. Of course Logan would think of her as a little sister. That explained those stupid soft smiles. She wasn’t even on his radar. And why would she be?

Jonah filled her cup. She glanced down at her wrinkled clothes. Even they were a disappointment. Flattering and comfortable, but they didn’t scream hot or sexy like Claire’s high heels or Morgan’s pencil skirts or anything Phoebe wore. Hell, even Emily’s flowing clothes were romantic. Lacy was utilitarian.

Another memory drifted in. Lacy remembered sitting on the couch and telling Jonah about Chet. “Oh, crap.”

“What?” Jonah’s eyes weren’t filled with pity thankfully. Just the same old Jonah stood there, watching her.

“Did I tell you about Chet?” She winced as if saying his name out loud would summon the jerk.

A flash of anger went through his eyes, but then it vanished. “Yeah.”

Well, shit.

“Can you help me down?” She glanced at Jonah. With her up here, they were practically the same height. She didn’t trust her legs to catch her if she jumped down.

He didn’t say anything, just put his glass beside the sink and lifted her from the counter and set her on her feet. His bare chest was directly in front of her. Her fingertips tingled to trace over the ridges of muscles. Being this close to him felt familiar before he backed away.

“Did you hold me?” The memory was blurred but she swore she’d felt his arms around her and not just once. She had this urge to lean against him, like he would keep her safe.

“It was either hold you or watch you wipe out on the sidewalk in front of the bar.” Jonah leaned in his spot, watching her warily.

“There’s something else.” What was it? She couldn’t put her finger on it. “Did I get sick?”

“Yes.” He seemed more closed off suddenly. Weird.

A bit of a memory crept into her mind of kneeling on the bathroom floor and a warm hand rubbing her back. Then being held again. She glanced up at Jonah. He was the only one here. Had he held her or was that a dream?

“How did I get to bed?” She barely remembered being in the apartment. She was thankful she didn’t remember much about getting sick, but she had no idea how she made it to her bed. For all she knew, she stumbled in and crashed.

“I carried you.”

Heat flooded her face. She definitely didn’t remember that.

“Okay.” Well, one mystery solved, but why was he standoffish again? “Did I hit on you?”

A slight tilt to his mouth, almost the illusion of a smile. “No.”

“Huh.”

He had taken her to her bedroom and put her fully clothed in bed. Sleeping would have been more comfortable in pajamas, but at least she didn’t have to blush every time she looked at him, knowing he had undressed her. “Thank you fornothelping me undress.”

“Of course.” He nodded with a faint lift to his lips.

Okay back to the thought that kept spinning around in her head like a noisy gnat. “Logan said little sister. That I was like a little sister?”

Jonah nodded. His expression gave nothing away.

“Is that how everyone sees me?” she said it mostly to herself, but Jonah nodded again.

“Well, crap.” She set down her almost empty second cup of coffee with a little more force than necessary. “Nobodywantstheir little sister as a girlfriend.”
