Jonah uncrossed his arms. They needed to get this over with before he did something he’d regret. He walked over to the rack she was browsing.

“Maybe some skinny jeans and a cute top.” Lacy stopped and flinched. “Not cute. Sexy. Definitely sexy.”

He gave her a noise to let her know he heard her. He didn’t shop a lot, but he had a sister. He also paid attention. “You need to try on clothes.”

She turned and stepped in close to him before lifting her gaze to his. “I don’t know what to pick.” She glanced over her shoulder as if people were trying to listen to their conversation. No one stood anywhere near them, but she leaned even closer and fake whispered, “Obviously I don’t know what’s sexy.”

“We’re in advertising. We tell people what’s sexy.” Jonah did his best to keep his eyes from falling to her lips. She had on the lightest touch of makeup, including a swipe of gloss over her lips. They practically begged to be kissed.

It wasn’t the makeup though. She just had to be around him and he wanted to kiss her. He wanted to do more than kiss her. But for the sake of his current living and work situation, he wouldn’t be doing anything with her, except be her friend. Which also hadn’t been part of his plan, but he could adapt.

“I’m not good at that part of our job. I’m great at the cute part though.” She smiled up at him and turned on her heel to the rack of clothes.

“All right. How about we make this a challenge?” Jonah waited for her to look at him.

Her eyebrow rose. “What kind of challenge?”

“Let’s see who can pick out the sexiest outfit for you.”

“What does the winner get?” Both of her eyebrows raised with curiosity.

“Lunch. I’d say drinks tonight, but something tells me you won’t be drinking a lot.” He couldn’t help the quick flash of a grin on his lips.

She groaned and pressed a finger against her temple. “Not drinking for a long time.”

“Do we have a wager?” He held out his hand.

She eyed it and looked up at him with a smirk on her lips. “I thought we didn’t shake hands.”

“We could kiss on it.” The words slipped out of his mouth. He wanted her to say yes. He wanted her to laugh it off. He wanted to kiss her until she knew how sexy she was to him.

Instead, she grabbed his hand with hers. “Fine. We’ll shake on it. Lunch.”

His hand engulfed hers and he smiled. There was his fierce little bird.

She gave him her sizes and then they spread out. He’d shopped with his sister before and he knew what he liked on a woman, but shopping for Lacy was different. He’d seen her work style, even her casual weekend clothes, and her pajamas, but she’d never worn anything that screamed sexy. To him, even her kitten pajamas were sexy because she wore them. They tantalized with brief glimpses rather than giving everything away, and they were loose on her, making for easy access.

Soon they stood in the changing room area with a decent selection of clothes for her to try on.

“No wimping out. You have to come out and show me.” He held onto the clothes when she went to take them from him.

She smiled, obviously placating him. “Of course.”

“If you don’t, I’ll have to come in.” He gave her a wicked grin.

She flushed pink and dropped her gaze for a second. “Noted.”

He released the clothes. As she slipped into the room, he sat on the bench, still in the changing room area away from the other customers. The light piped-in music covered any sign of anyone else’s existence. The rustle of clothing behind the curtain seemed amplified. Taking out his phone, he answered a few texts from Logan about tonight. Where to meet. When. That kind of thing. Anything to distract him from Lacy undressing. Some nightclub named Fire and after dinner around eight.

“This is definitely a no,” came her distasteful tone from behind the curtain.

“You still have to show me.” He grinned at her groan of displeasure. “A deal has been made. I’m more than willing to com—”

“Fine.” Her voice was curt. She came out in a chunky dress that looked like it belonged on a doll and not a woman. It was sleeveless and the shape was almost like a bell. It didn’t show any of her curves, but it stopped at the top of her thighs. She made a face. “See I told you.”

He dropped his smile. “Yeah, that’s not it.”

“Why did you even pick this?” She held up the hem and he saw more of her thigh or more precisely her hip.
