Lacy’s innocence shouldn’t make him want her more. What was he thinking? He wanted to give in, but what happened to Lacy when he disappeared from her life? Did she end up hiding forever? What if he stayed and it didn’t work out? What if he broke her far worse than any Chet could?

Or could he find a way to set her free without hurting her?

“Would you please let me in on the secret everyone else knows?” She sank into the chair next to his and grabbed his hand on the table with both of hers. “Why would I ever just want to fuck someone?”

“You can be attracted to someone but not want to have a relationship with them.”

She released his hand and eased back in her chair. “Is that the way you feel about Candy?”

“Candy and I have an arrangement. If I’m in town and she’s free, we get together for the night because the sex is good.” Jonah swallowed. He shouldn’t be having this conversation with Lacy. But he also couldn’t resist.

* * *

Lacy pickedat the hem of her skirt absently. “So, if you wanted to have sex right now, you could call up Candy and she’d be your hookup? And she wouldn’t expect anything more from the relationship?”

“If I wanted to have sex with Candy, yes.” His blue eyes had darkened and his hungry gaze dropped to her hem. His intensity had her warring between jumping him and running away to take a cold shower.

Inhaling, Lacy had to ask. “Why did you pick me for fuck?”

“Why did you pick me?” He didn’t move an inch, but he seemed closer somehow. Sparks lit under her skin.

“I didn’t want them to tease me at work about Ben so I picked marry for him. I also couldn’t pick Logan for marry because I didn’t want to tip my hand and scare him away. But then I couldn’t pick Logan for fuck because I want to date him, not be a hookup for the night.” Her heart fluttered in her chest. It might be the simplest explanation, but it wasn’t the whole explanation. Desire, hot and heavy, poured through her every time Jonah was close. He’d invaded her dreams more than just that one night.

“But you would hook up with me?” Jonah’s voice was deep and gravelly and stroked across her skin. Damn, his voice was potent.

She lifted her eyes to his. His blue eyes captured hers and held her in place. She couldn’t answer his question. He thought she was sexy and chose her over Phoebe and Claire to fuck. She didn’t understand him at all.

“Why did you choose me to fuck? Because it was the only category left?” She didn’t dare drop her gaze. She wanted to see if he flinched. To see the truth that if there had been a kill column, he might have put her in it. She was just what was left over.

He leaned forward slowly as if he feared she’d run away. He probably wasn’t too far off. Her heart raced and she couldn’t quite catch her breath. Him being this close put her on edge, but she didn’t want to be farther away. She wanted to be closer, pressed against him fully. His hand reached out and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. Her whole body shook from the electricity flooding her system from his touch. Her breath caught at the look in his eyes.

Closing the distance, he stopped when his nose was a breath away from hers. She couldn’t move or breathe, stuck in anticipation.

“Little bird, if I’d had the choice” —his gaze dropped to her lips and he swallowed— “I’d have put you in every category. I’m not looking to get married though. If you weren’t my roommate and coworker, I’d have fucked you every day since we met. And kiss you? Fuck. The worst part is I haven’t stopped thinking about wanting to kiss you.”

She inhaled and her lungs filled with his scent. He tilted his head slightly and leaned a little more forward. Her heart beat out a crazy rhythm in her chest. Would he kiss her now? God, she hoped so. She couldn’t take her eyes from his. She could lose herself in the blue depths, like slipping under the warm waves of the Caribbean and never surfacing again. Let his current drag her under.

“What secrets do you want to know, little bird?” His words were soft and his warm breath caressed her lips. She had asked him. “I’ll tell you everything.”

She swore her panties melted from the fire he ignited within her. She should back away. She should do what she always did and retreat. She couldn’t even blame her buzz on this. This was all her.

To hell with it.

She swallowed hard and even though everything within her screamed not to ask, she had to know. “Do you want me?”

“Yes.” The word was soft, brushing against her lips, making her insides burn brighter.

“Show me.” The words were barely a whisper, but his eyes darkened at them. She wet her lips.

His hands slipped behind her knees and tugged her towards him. She gasped at the contact. His knees settled between hers. She bit her lip as his thumbs rubbed the insides of her thighs, taking away any thoughts of running away.

“I don’t do relationships.” He was so close but still separate. Each word caressed her lips. “I’ve never settled in one place long enough in my life to have anything steady. I had women I visited to help scratch the itch whenever I needed it. If we have sex, I’m not going to change. But I will promise to only be with you while we do this.”

She swallowed.

Did she really want to do this?

Could she do this?
