It happened so quickly Jonah still didn’t know how he ended up on the floor, but he did manage to move to lean against the couch so it looked like he was watching the movie too before Sophie burst in.

Sophie dropped her keys on the console table and let the door shut. “Hey, Lacy.”

“Hi, Sophie.” Lacy waved at Sophie without turning around. Lacy’s face was probably bright red. He tried to suppress his smile.

Sophie’s eyes narrowed on him. “Hey. Jonah.”

“Hey.” Apparently they were trying to pretend nothing had happened. Jonah felt like he was in high school, trying to make out with his girlfriend and not get caught by his mom. If Sophie had come in fifteen minutes later, there would have been a whole lot happening. He did a quick mental checklist of the apartment and what they had gotten up to all day. They’d definitely picked up out here. That was good. Lunch would have covered any evidence in the trash can.

“Be right back.” He rose and headed to the bathroom where he made sure he had stashed the extra condoms in his bag and the ones in the trash were adequately buried. He took an extra moment before flushing the toilet and heading back in.

He resumed his seat on the floor.

“I guess you guys are getting along fine then?” Sophie had wheeled her bag closer to the hallway but she still stood there with her arms crossed over her chest.

“Ends up we work at the same company.” Lacy paused the movie and looked over at Sophie. “It’s been an interesting week.”

Jonah struggled to keep his gaze on the paused teens on the TV and managed to keep the smirk off his face. “Interesting” was one way to put it.

“Weird. Why didn’t Brenda tell us you worked at the same company?” Sophie raised her eyebrow at Jonah and he swore she would start tapping her foot any moment.

“She didn’t know.” Jonah finally met Sophie’s eyes.

She narrowed her eyes at him.

“Anyway,” Lacy said. “Jonah is fine. I’m fine. We’re all fine.”

Jonah closed his eyes but didn’t wince.Too many fines, Lacy.

“What are you doing home?” Lacy asked.

He finally turned to look at Lacy, but she seemed to have it all together. Her cheeks had only a slight tinge of pink. The color deepened slightly at his gaze, but she didn’t look at him.

Sophie sighed. “I’m here this week. They cancelled the travel scheduled so here I am.” She shrugged. “I don’t have to go in until late, so you can have the bathroom to yourself, Lacy.”

“Great.” Lacy pointed the remote at the TV. “We were just watching this new rom com on Netflix so. . . .”

“Yeah, sure, go ahead. I’m going to unpack and probably take a shower.” Sophie started toward her room. “Have you guys had dinner?”

They both shook their heads.

“Wanna get something delivered? I’m starving and could use a nice greasy pizza. All the meats.”

“I can order a couple.” Jonah picked up his phone and dismissed the text notification before finding the app for the pizza place.

“Great.” Sophie disappeared into her room.

Lacy pressed play on the movie and turned up the volume. She released a huge breath. “Sorry about the toss.”

“It’s fine.” He reached over and traced the tops of her toes peeking out from her pajamas.

“Can we not tell anyone?” Lacy leaned close to him. Her words soft and almost breathless.

“Is this the end?” He turned to face her. His heart clattered to a stop, waiting for her answer. Their mouths so close he could kiss her.

“Do you. . . want it to be?”

He lifted his hand to brush her hair behind her ear. “Hell no.”
