Brandon looked over at me with the same smile on his face as the day we met.

“She bumped right into me with her nose in a book.”

Asher let out a loud burst of laughter.

“Yeah, that sounds like my baby sister alright.”

He stood, pointing his beer at Brandon.

“Can I get you one?”

Shaking his head at his response caught me off guard.

“I don’t drink.”

Asher walked away when he paused and turned back to us.

“You’ll probably want to. That one is so tightly wound she could cause Mother Teresa to become an alcoholic.”

Grabbing the nearest pillow, I thrust it directly at his head. He always had to be such an asshole.

“Ignore him.”

I stuck my tongue out at Asher as he made his way back to the fridge. Brandon lowered his voice, leaning into me.

“Trust me, I knew that was coming.”

Dinner went smoothly and Brandon fit right in, laughing, and sharing his own stories about his love for football and school. I admired how easily he sat with a group of complete strangers and could be so calm and collected. The idea of going to meet his family terrified me. His parents were divorced, and their marriage didn’t end on the best of terms. He tended to avoid them at all costs around the holidays or it would turn into a competition for who got more time with him. I felt bad that he preferred spending time alone over being with his family.

It overjoyed him when Maddie gave him her seal of approval. I decided I would keep my little indiscretion before I left school to myself and just enjoy that my best friend could meet my boyfriend. They got along instantly as he ate up every one of her stories about clubs in the city. He confessed he had visited a few of the ones she mentioned. Born and raised in northern New Jersey, he knew all the places and things she talked about. It helped me relax, knowing that they got along so well.

Maddie, of course, pulled me aside and gave me a speech about being safe and using protection, like I didn’t already know. She claimed those east coast boys were so much different from what we were used to. It made me laugh. I reassured her I was listening and would keep all her advice in mind.
