Like any true drunk, he apologized after pleading with me to trust him. Spouting nonsense about how it would never happen again. Although I knew it would. Since he had never laid a hand on me, I moved past it until it would happen again. I trusted he was smart enough to never touch me; especially after I had introduced him to my Uncle Landon in his uniform.

My Uncle Landon and I had a bond that much of my family didn’t understand. My mother never understood how I could so easily trust him after the accident. She failed to see through her jaded eyes was that it was just that, an accident. He could have been right next to me, and the results would have been the same. I never once blamed him for falling through the ice. Not as a child, and not even after I had overheard my parents talking one night about the girl who had been distracting him while he was with me. I never saw a girl near him as I twirled on the ice that day. Knowing that he pulled me from the water and revived me was all that mattered. He saved my life and for that, I would always be grateful.

When Brandon started drinking more around me and I saw what he may be capable of, it worried me. I made it a point to show him that if he ever touched me or hurt me, I would have an entire police squad knocking at his door. I like to think that’s why it was always just verbal abuse he put me through.

My uncle’s friends: Liam and Tyler, became just as protective over me once my mom eased up about Uncle Landon being around. I guess I had my Aunt Becca to thank for that, being that she’s the one that forced him to talk to my mom and finally put everything behind them.

I never told my uncle why I wanted him to come over in his uniform. I just let him know I wanted any guy I was with to know what they had to face if they messed with me. Luckily, he trusted me enough to know if I was in trouble, I would tell him.

The behavior that I saw when I was with Brandon was a part of our relationship that I didn’t even share with Ryder. If Asher or Nate knew the entire story of Brandon, he probably would have left Texas with a broken nose and a black eye. While yes, he called me a prude bitch, and he slept with someone else while we were still together; it was the drinking and subsequent violence that made me finally realize it needed to end. Get out while I still could.

The grip of his fingers twisting themselves around my upper arm caused an instant ache. My mind flashed back to one of our first disagreements when I realized he wasn’t the perfect man I thought he was. As they tightened more with each passing second, it had me wincing in pain as I tried to pull back.

“Brandon, you're hurting me. Let go of my arm.”

I tried to keep my voice low, knowing if people got involved, it would probably turn into a tremendous ordeal. There wasn’t a person here that didn’t know I had broken up with Brandon. It was a sucker punch to his ego to be dumped by a freshman and by the looks of him; he wasn’t going down without a fight. Tonight was about blowing off steam from finals not getting arrested, so the fewer people involved, the better. He planted his lips over mine, pushing hard against me as I tried to pull back.

“Let’s go Katie. We have a lot to talk about.”

Pulling me through the crowd, I knew he was trying to get me to the secluded area of his room.

“Brandon, please, how about we just enjoy the party? We can talk another day.”

His eyes were glazed over. Keeping us around other people was important right now. The last time he looked like this, he fractured his hand by punching a brick wall outside my dorm. He thought I had been flirting with one guy from his house when all I did was offer to tutor him if he was having trouble in one of his classes.

As he pushed the door open with his shoulder, his grip finally released me as he tossed me into the room like I was a rag doll. Falling to the floor, I worried no one would come look for me. Ryder would probably assume I had just ditched early to see Nate more before I had to head home.Shit.Nate was supposed to pick me up. He would probably think I was having fun at a party and lost track of time. We had been missing each other every time we tried to hang out after we got back to our normal routines, so it wouldn’t come as a surprise if I wasn’t on time.

“What the fuck, Brandon?”

I stood up, rubbing my arm where he had dug his fingers into it. Taking a few steps away from him, trying my best to not make it obvious I was putting distance between us.

“From what I hear, you like it rough.”

He scoffed with a hint of resentment in his eyes.

“Who the hell would even say something like that?”

It filled his eyes with not only hurt but deep-seated animosity towards me as he spoke. My heart was pounding in my chest as I tried my hardest to keep my cool and not let him see how terrified I was right now.

“You think Ryder didn’t tell Paul about your spring break fuck-a-thon? She left out names, so he assumed it was me and congratulated me on getting you back and finally fucking your brains out. Wasn’t me though, was it? You’re a filthy whore. Acting so innocent, I doubt you were even a virgin when you were with me.”

Even the way his eyes traced their way up and down made me feel violated. Stalking across the room, forcing my back against the wall next to the door, he caged me between his arms. Inhaling deeply like he was trying to breathe my soul from my body, my head instinctually fell to the side away from him.

It was hard to sort through the thoughts racing through my mind. I knew if I said the wrong thing, it would set him off and I could be at the receiving end of his anger. His tongue traced up the side of my now exposed neck as his hand slid between my legs. Without hesitation, my knee rose with such force that it knocked him back as he moaned out in agony, grabbing his crotch and falling back onto the floor.

“You fucking bitch, you’ll pay for that.”

He gasped between whimpers of his pain. I knew I only had a few seconds before he could regain his composure and get up. Pulling the door open, I forced my way through the crowd as quickly as I could.

My entire body was still shaking as I ran into my dorm. What the hell just happened? Locking the door behind me, I collapsed on my bed. Half an hour had passed, and I had finally gotten control of my breathing when my phone buzzed.

Ryder: Where are you?

I hesitated to answer, not knowing if she was near Brandon. She could tell him exactly where to find me to finish whatever the hell it was he planned to do to me. I knew I pissed him off, refusing to sleep with him. Not taking him back didn’t help, but this was extreme, even for him.

Katie: just needed to clear my head what’s up?

Ryder: you okay? Brandon is out of control. Campus police just brought him in for assault.
