He squared his shoulders. “I’d respect that. But I’d also hope you’d be cool with us living next door to you instead of being your roommates.”

“You’d be willing to move around with us wherever the Marine Corps sent me so she could help me with my kid?”

“Yeah, man. I’m asking you for your blessing to marry yoursister. That would make us family. And I’d do anything for my family. You can ask any one of my brothers—blood or old Marine buddies—and my sisters, too. Nothing means more to me than family.”

Out of reasons to object, I took a steadying breath and held out my hand for him to shake. “Well, I can tell you love her, Trevor. So you’ve got my blessing.”

He returned my handshake with a wide grin, then pulled me in for a hug and patted my back a couple times before releasing me. “Thank you. It will mean a lot to her. It means a lot to both of us.”

“When are you planning to ask her?”

At this, he let out a nervous laugh. “Honestly?”

“Yeah.”

“I’m planning to wait awhile. Definitely long enough for you and Layla to head in this direction. She’s determined to be there for you and Gray for as long as you need her, and I don’t think proposing is the right move until it’s clear that you don’t.”

“Oh, wow. No pressure, huh?”

He laughed again. “Sorry, man. I’d be ready to marry her tomorrow if I thought she’d say yes, but I’m willing to wait until I know she’s ready.”

“Well, I’ll be sure to keep you in the loop on me and Layla. I have to admit, I was pretty nervous when you brought this up, but you sold it. You’re a good guy, Trev. I’m excited for you guys.”

“Thanks.”

“Hey,” Jo called, walking out of the dining room and through the foyer until she reached us. “What are you guys doing?”

“Just talking,” I said, giving nothing away.

“Okay, well, come on. Gray’s looking for you. Mom told him he didn’t need to get a side of fruit with his chocolate chip pancakes, and he wants to make sure you’re okay with it.”

I shook my head with a grin. “Ah, poor kid.”

“You’re not gonna make him get a side of fruit, are you?” she asked as the three of us headed in to eat.

“Nah. It’s a special occasion. Who eats healthy on Thanksgiving, anyway?”
