I run into Jackson and Jordy a few times. They all treat me like an old friend, giving me a hard time about my attraction to Luke. But I can tell it all comes from a place of love for Luke, and respect for me. Vera comes over Saturday afternoon to help me get ready for my date. I hold up two dresses and she points to the black one. “This one makes your tits look amazing,” she says and I sigh.

“Like sophisticated amazing, or stripper amazing?”

She grumbles something about me being a prude, but I choose to ignore it. “It’s sophisticated sexy.”

I nod in approval as I pull the dress off the hangar. This is our third date, but I’m so nervous I couldn’t eat all day. This date seems like a big deal. More official. Like two adults who are are ready to get serious.

The dress is sleeveless and shimmery and sits right above the knee. It’s not skin tight, but still flatters my curves. Vera hands me a pair of what she calls ‘fuck me’ heels. “It might send the wrong message,” I hedge.

“What? You don’t want him to fuck you?”

My face heats. “I mean yea, but it’s too soon.”

She frowns. “Life’s too short. You need to grab this situation by the balls. Literally and figuratively.”

I laugh and shake my head at her.

“It doesn’t hurt to be prepared, just in case. Speaking of, did you take care of the ladyscape?” She points to my crotch. My face heats again.

“Ha! You dirty girl. I knew it.” She gives me a smug grin.

I laugh. “He does things to me, but I’m scared. What if I’m terrible?”

“Girl, he’d do things to a nun. And you’ll be fine. It’s like riding a bike, trust me.”

We both die of laughter.

She helps me with my makeup, a sexy cat eye I can never pull off on my own. We curl my hair into soft waves and Vera gives it more volume than I’m used to, but I don’t hate it.

I step into the heels and gaze into the mirror at the finished product.

“Damn. You’re going to do things to him tonight,” she says. I smile at my reflection. I can’t remember the last time I felt this confident.

When Luke invited me over last weekend, I thought my nerves would make me pass out. Vera talked me through it. “Liv, you’re a gorgeous, badass woman. Luke is lucky to have even a minute of your attention.”

By the time he had me wrapped up in his muscular arms, my nerves were on a low simmer. Luke has that effect. He makes me feel like the most important person in the room. The heated looks he gave me drove me insane all night. I had to ease the aching need between my legs when I got home.

I glance at the clock and rush to throw things in my clutch. Just as I close it, Vera stops me. “Don’t forget these.” She tosses a roll of condoms at me.

“Vera! No. We haven’t even kissed yet.”

“Liv! Yes. It doesn’t matter. The chemistry between you two is off the charts. It will happen.”

I can tell I won’t win this one, so I tear one off and shove it in my clutch to appease her. She gives me an exasperated sigh, but relents.

“Ok. I better scram before he gets here. You’re sexy as fuck, Liv. He’s going to lose his mind.” She winks as we hug. “I’m so proud of you, Liv. I know it’s scary, but try to live in the moment. Luke is a good guy. Even John approves. You’ve got this.” She smiles as she steps back and looks me over.

“Thanks. I appreciate you,” I say.

“Anytime.” She heads out the door. The second it closes, the nerves return and my stomach clenches.

I fix my lipstick and rub at a smudge under my eye that ends up being a freckle as my panic rises. What if he gets the wrong idea? What’s the right idea? There’s a knock on the door and my throat gets tight. I straighten my dress and nod at myself in the mirror.

You can do this. You know him pretty well at this point. His friends are cool. He’s cool. You’re cool. Just be cool. Don’t think about the fact that there’s a condom in your clutch and you spent over an hour making sure your hoo-ha looked presentable, just in case. I reach for the doorknob and take a deep breath.
