He goes quiet for a while. “I’m sorry your life isn’t normal.”

“What’s this about?”

“Watching Luke fall in love. You’re only a few years older than him. You should have that.”

“Never say never.”

He glances at me. “Never took you for an optimist.”

I don’t respond and Raven goes silent. We finish out our run and Raven takes the shower first while I make us breakfast. I think back to my one and only relationship and sigh. I was so naïve it’s laughable. I’m a different person now. I would never subject a woman to this shit show. It wouldn’t be fair to her. My comment earlier was more about wishes and dreams than optimism.

My phone rings and I answer it. “Raven isn't answering. Just wanted you to know I’m en route, and the bunker is on lockdown,” Sylvie says.

“Do you need anything? I already set up your lab and most of the furniture.”

“Say it with me, Spec. Secret lair.”

I plop the protein powder into the blender and toss in a handful of berries and some almond milk. I turn to find the bananas. “Stop calling me Spec.”

She chuckles. “Start calling it my secret lair.”

“You good?”

She sighs. “It wouldn’t kill you to laugh.”

“Can’t be too careful.”

She snorts. “Whatever. I’m good. Tell Raven I’ll check in when I get the blood sample.”

I grunt in response and hang up, just to piss her off. I smirk as I turn on the blender.
