"Finally Grandma, really?" Elijah deadpans.

"I said finally, didn't I?" She arches a brow at him before looking back at me. "And you're just in time to eat some of my cake. Come, come."

Elijah walks behind us as his grandma pulls me towards the kitchen.

"Wait, I have to cook dinner for her first," Elijah argues.

"I'll make sure she still has room for dinner. Now, you sit down right here and I'll cut you a slice."

"And me?" Elijah asks.

"You are not a guest and have two perfectly working legs."

Elijah leans down and whispers into my ear. "Like I said, she's nice but tough."

"What was that now?" his grandma shouts.

"I said she won't be able to get enough." He straightens and says, "Of your cake."

"Mmhmm. That's what I thought. Pour us some juice while you're up too." She puts a plate in front of me then takes the seat across from me. "Good ahead, try it."

I cut into it and put a piece of the chocolate cake in my mouth. "This is so good."

She grins. "I know. So tell me about yourself."

I hate that question, like when you're at a job interview and they start with that one. What are you really supposed to say? I'm Jolie, nineteen, an only child now, I guess since my sister killed herself. I don't even realize how long I've been silent until Elijah sits next to me and steps in to save me from my awkwardness.

"You haven't even told her your name yet grandma." He chuckles.

"Who cares about names when my boy has finally brought a girl home."

Elijah's head drops forward. "You are really laying it on thick Grandma. She probably wants to run out of here now."

"And miss seeing you get all embarrassed?" I smirk. "Not a chance."

He shakes his head. "Her name is Louise, since she still didn't tell you."

"So I'm the first girl you've brought home huh?" I ask.

"The one and only," Louise answers for him, then looks at Elijah. "Now, what are you planning on cooking for her so she comes back?"

"Those chicken thighs we have in the fridge, if you don't need them."

"Cook away but save me some."

"Stay and eat with us," I insist.

"Nobody wants an old lady sitting with them while they eat and talk. I'll do just fine with a plate in my room. Besides, my favorite show is about to come on."

"Which show?" I ask.

"Ghost adventures."

"Oh, I could never watch that. I wouldn't be able to sleep for a month."

She grins. "You should not have told me that. Now, I'm gonna make sure we watch an episode together. Don't burn my food, Elijah."

And with that she leaves the kitchen.
