"Okay. That's it. I withdraw my invitation."
I slump into my seat. "I knew it. The singing is just too much."

I stay silent for a moment, content with the answer I'm able to give him. "I said my goodbye to her."

"So for my birthday on Thursday, we usually go to this restaurant right outside of town that I really liked when I was younger, and we started the tradition," Elijah says.
I stuff food into my mouth to keep from babbling that that is not the plan this year. "Oh okay." I mumble. "What time?"
"We'll probably leave around six."
I nod. "Are you excited?"
"For my birthday, not really. But to have dinner with you and my grandma, yes."
Hopefully that excitement grows when he sees what we really have planned for the day.
The morning of his birthday, I know just the way to make sure his day starts off the best way it can.
