“Aw Maw-Maw, momma was going to make chocolate chip pancakes,” Arden whines.

“Oh, you mean like these?” She grins as she lifts a plate stacked high with chocolate chip pancakes.

“Yay! You’re the best Maw-Maw ever!” Lachlan exclaims happily.

Gasping at him, and putting my hand over my heart dramatically, I say, “Hey! I was going to make them, she just beat me to it.”

She comes around to pat my head. “I’ll always be the favorite, it’s part of being the grandparent.”

I give an over-exaggerated huff. “Yeah yeah,” I say, getting up to help fix the kids’ plates.

“So, what’s the plan for today?” she asks, putting bacon and eggs on the kids’ plates while I cut up their pancakes.

“Well, we are going to eat breakfast, then the kids want to play in their playroom for a bit. I figure we will get dressed around eleven thirtyish, since Silas said they would be here around one,’’ I tell her while shoveling food into my mouth. Man, I really missed her cooking.

“Okay, great. I’m going to tend to my plants before they all get here. Call me if you need me,” she says as she stacks the last of the dishes in the dishwasher and walks out, kissing the kids on the head as she goes.

“Okay boys, finish up, then scrape your plates and put them in the dishwasher.” I tell the kids as I do the same with mine and Vivi’s plates. We make our way to the play room and spend the next couple hours playing in the tree house and dressing up. Right on schedule, I usher the kids out of the playroom to get dressed at half past eleven. Arden wants to pick out his own outfit because ‘he’s a big boy, and big boys dress themselves.’

While he’s doing that, I throw Vivi in some pink flower shorts, a t-shirt that says “Girls Rule The World'', and her cute little converse. After pulling her hair in pigtails, I hand her the tablet so I can help Lochlan get ready. I give him some blue jean shorts, a Minecraft shirt, and his docs, then let him play with his sister. I put on some yoga shorts and a ripped up Five Finger Death Punch shirt, my black converse, and just pull my waist length hair into a high ponytail, not bothering with makeup. Might as well show them the real me.

Arden comes walking in with his nice blue jean shorts, a light blue button up shirt with the buttons done up wrong, and his church loafers. He looks so cute that I have to bite back a grin. Adorable? Yes. Fishing ready? Absolutely not. But the fact he was trying to make a good impression makes me one proud mom.

“Um, baby we are going fishing and we will be around mud, so how about we put some converse on so your nice shoes don’t get dirty?” I gently try to convince him.

“But I want to look nice, so they want to spend more time with us,” he says. “My daddy never wanted to spend time with us unless we were in our church clothes.” My heart sinks at his words.

I wish I could bring Corin back to life just to kill him again. “I’m so sorry your daddy made you feel like that, and I’m sorry I put y'all in that situation baby, but I swear, I’ll never let anyone make you feel that way again. I don’t think Silas and his brothers are in any way like your dad was. He seemed really excited to take y'all fishing, and he’s not going to care about what you wear okay?’’

He flings himself at me in a huge hug, and says, “It’s not your fault daddy was an asshole.”

“ARDEN! You can’t say that word, it’s an adult word, understand?”

“Yes, momma. I’ll change my shoes and shirt, I guess,” he huffs, heading back to his room.

Laughing at his antics, I tell him, “Come to the living room when you’re done and we’ll go wait for them, okay?’’

I really hope this doesn’t backfire and my kids end up getting hurt.
