Wiping my eyes, I can’t believe she did all this for them, and it makes me glad I decided to make this move. I look over at the boys who are still frozen in their spot… their dad wouldn’t let me decorate their rooms in anything but neutral colors and we were only allowed to hang bible verses on the wall. If I never hear another bible verse it’ll be too soon.

“What do you think, boys?” I ask them, walking further into the room.

“Is this really ours, mommy?” Lochlan whispers.

“Yeah, baby, this is y’all’s new room,” I tell them excitedly.

“YAY! This is the best room EVER!” Arden shouts, throwing himself at her with arms open for a hug. “Thank you, you’re the best Maw-Maw ever!”

“I’m glad you like it, baby. I would do anything for you kids and your mom,” she tells him as she bends down to hug them both.

“Come on Vivi, let’s go see your room, huh princess?” I ask my daughter who is dozing off in my arms.

She rubs her eyes sleepily and nods excitedly. Walking out of the boys’ room to the next door, I opened it to find a gorgeous bathroom that she clearly decorated for the kids. It has white tile floors and it’s painted a pretty pale yellow with a paint splattered shower curtain. On the walls there are a couple pictures with cute little sayings like ‘Flush, Wipe, Wash’, ‘Scrub a dub dub’, ‘Brush, Rinse, Floss’, and a cute light green bath mat in front of the tub. Everything is done in different colors to perfectly match the shower curtain. She has also stocked brand new toothbrushes, towels, and everything else the kids will need.

Turning away, I walk across the hall to the next room, opening the door, and my jaw drops. Wow, this woman doesn’t go half-ass on anything… god, she’s gonna spoil the hell out of these kids, I think to myself. This room is every little girl’s dream princess room. It’s painted a soft gray, and in the corner is an iron framed pink princess canopy bed, with a sheer lavender canopy. There is an actual crystal chandelier, and dear god is that a Barbie dream house?

“AHHHHHHHH!” Vivian screeches, suddenly wide awake, climbing out of my arms. “MOMMY, LOOK! LOOK MOMMY! Princess bed!”

“I see, baby, isn’t it so pretty?” I ask, looking at my grandmother who is standing there grinning like the cat who got the canary. “Really Maw-Maw? Don’t you think this is a bit much? Do I even want to know what’s in the toy boxes?”

“Nope, probably not, and it’s not too much. After everything those kids have been through it’s nowhere near enough. Like you have any room to talk? Your Paw-Paw spoiled the hell out of you, and you know it,” she says as she cackles. “Now, let’s go look at your room.”

I follow her down the hall to another set of doors. They are large, dark chestnut colored, with golden handles, and she pushes them open. Holy fuck. Once again, I have no words. “Maw-Maw…'' I start looking around. The room has a beautiful dark hardwood floor, and is painted a stunning emerald green with white trim, but the focal point that draws my gaze is what looks like an Alaskan king size four poster bed with gorgeous cream curtains. The bed has a burnt orange comforter, with cream colored throw pillows and a gold throw. A cream colored dreamcatcher adorns one wall, as well as two decorative tapestries; one with the different moon phases, the other depicting the Lovers tarot card. A thick cream rug ties the room together. Across from the bed is a fireplace with a 65 inch TV above it. Different ivies and ferns are hanging all around the room, giving it a glamorous and earthy feeling.

Walking across the room to yet another door I pull it open, and I swear my heart stops. Damn she’s trying to kill me. The bathroom is black. Black walls and a beautiful black tile floor. In one corner sits a huge jacuzzi tub that has a bamboo tray over it, and there are candles in gold candle holders everywhere. The shower is massive with two shower heads and a seat that goes under both. Taking up one whole wall there is a double sink separated by an elegant and spacious vanity. It’s my actual dream bedroom and bathroom… wait.

“Maw-Maw did you look at my Pinterest?!” I ask stunned

“Well, of course I did. I wanted everything to be perfect,” she tells me with a smile. “I also ordered pretty much everything on yours and the kids’ wishlist on Amazon too.”

“When did you do all this?” I ask, stunned. “I only told you six months ago what the plan was. There is no way that was enough time to do all this.”

“Well I’ve been working on it since you got pregnant with Vivi. I knew you wouldn’t last long with that jackass after his reaction to finding out she was a girl,” she says, smiling sadly.

If she only knew half of it, I’m sure she would’ve hired a hitman. “Thank you Maw-Maw… for everything; for now, for after mom and dad died. Thank you for sticking by me.” I tell her, wrapping my arms around her.

“You’re welcome baby. Now, let’s go see what the kids are doing,” she replies, steering me back to Vivian’s room first. My sweet little girl is passed out, curled up on the bed with her stuffed bunny. “Poor thing was tired, wasn’t she?” Maw-Maw chuckles while lowering the lights.

We walk next door and the boys are sitting at a lego table playing. “Hey boys, it’s time to get settled okay? Go grab y’all’s bags out the living room and get changed. I’ll put the TV on for you,” I tell them.

While they get changed and brush their teeth, I turn the TV on to PAW Patrol. Once they come back in the room, I get them both in their beds, and Maw-Maw and I kiss them goodnight. “We love you boys, sweet dreams okay? Mommy is right down the hall. I’ll leave the light on and doors open, so call me if you need me, alright?”

“Okay momma, we love y’all too! Y’all are the best momma and Maw-Maw ever!” Arden excitedly tells us.

“I love y’all too mommy, sweet dreams.” Lochlan tells me as he yawns. I exit the room, knowing they will be asleep within minutes. After telling Maw-Maw goodnight, and taking a quick shower–because I’m way too tired to enjoy a bath–I fall into bed. I’m scared I’ll wake up and this will be a dream and l’ll be back in that hell. I spend the next couple hours tossing and turning trying to get my mind to shut off enough to sleep. It’s hard getting comfortable in a new place, new bed. Finally, just after three in the morning, I fall into a dreamless sleep.
