ISLA

Waking up in my literal Pinterest dream room makes me feel like this is all a fairytale. A bat shit crazy one with tiny banshees yelling that they are starving to death. At SIX. In. The. Morning. Ugh. Even though they didn’t go to bed till ten, three hours past their bedtime, I’m hoping maybe they will fall back asleep.

“MOMMMMMMM!!!!!!” Arden screeches “Feed us or we are gonna dieeee!”

Seriously?Dramatic much. “Okay, baby I’m getting up!” I called back. “We are gonna have to find our way to Maw-Maw’s big kitchen, since we don’t have food in here yet,” I tell him as I try to get clothes on. Why the hell aren’t these pants going on? Ahh, this is a shirt. Okay, it’s obvious I need caffeine. I don’t even like coffee but today is shaping up to be one of those days. Walking out of my room after finally figuring out my clothes, I find all three of my babies sitting on the couch watching Peppa Pig, waiting for me.

“Why are y’all up so early?” I ask them, plopping my tired self down and snuggling into Vivi, who starts rubbing my head.

“Sissy woke up and got in bed with me and I couldn’t go back to sleep.” Arden tells me as he gets up for his morning cuddles. All three of my kids love to snuggle in the mornings when they first get up; their dad worked nights, so mornings were our peaceful happy times. Lochlan squeezes in and gives me kisses.

“I love you mommy,” he tells me in his sweet little voice.

Smiling back at him, I reply, “I love you too baby, I love all three of you so much. Ready to go find some food?”

“Yeah!” all three of them yell at the same time.

“Okay okay,” I laugh. “Let’s go, my little monkeys.” I really hope I can find the damn kitchen in this massive place. Looking out the door of our wing, I know we came in from the left, and we passed the kitchen, so I headed that way with my little ducklings following behind me.

“Mommy what does that sign say?” Arden asks me, pointing to a white sign on the wall.

Oooh, the crazy lady thinks she’s funny.“It’s a sign pointing out different things; that arrow says kitchen.” I tell him, rolling my eyes. I’m not THAT bad with directions. Following all the little arrows we finally make it to the kitchen, and immediately we can smell chocolate.

“PANCAKES!!!” The boys yell happily, as we walk in to see Maw-Maw cooking.

“Not just any pancakes, I made y’all chocolate chip pancakes! It was your mom’s favorite when she was your age,” she tells them, grinning as she places the last bit of pancakes on the huge stack she has. “Did you like the arrows?” she asks while smirking at me. “I know how easily you get lost.”

“That was ONE TIME, and the GPS sent me in the wrong direction! Plus I was just a kid.” I huff at her.

“Isla Claire, you were eighteen, and you called your Paw-Paw crying like a crazy person cause you ended up five hours in the wrong direction, and he had to fly to Texas to get you. How do you get to Texas when you’re going to Florida?!” She asks, exasperated.

“Hey, I took the exit the GPS said to take. I didn’t realize I’d put the address in wrong. Besides, y’all didn’t want me going to Florida anyway.” I mumble.

“Mom, you got lost back home all the time,” Arden gleefully reminds me.

“Hush and eat your pancakes, tattletale,” I snarked back. Mouthy little monster loves to remind me of that. “So anyways, changing the subject, what is the plan now that I’m here? I really don’t know what to do next?”

“We need to register the kids for school; it starts in two weeks,” Maw-Maw reminds me.

“Yeah, I know. If you don’t mind watching the kids I can do that tomorrow, since it’s Monday.” I glance at her, raising my eyebrow.

“Well of course I’ll watch my sweet babies! What? You don’t think I can handle them?” she snarks.

“Maw-Maw, you’re not exactly a spring chicken, and three kids is a lot, especially the boys!” I laugh at her; she has no idea. She might have raised me and Saige, but we were actually really good kids. I never made straight A’s because math hates me, but I didn’t fail any classes. We didn’t party or do drugs. My boys, though, are feral little monsters once they are comfortable. I think it’s because when their dad was home he expected them to be seen, not heard, but when he wasn’t around I allowed them to be normal children.

“I’ll show you a spring chicken!” I hear as I’m smacked in the forehead with an egg.

“WHAT THE HELL YA CRAZY WOMAN!” I screech as I run to the sink to scrub my face.

“Now what was that dear?” she asks, smirking at me while the little monsters I gave life to laugh at me.

“Nothing,” I humphed back. “I’m going to take a shower.”

I rush out of the kitchen, following the stupid arrows back to my suite. I can’t believe that crazy old bat. I swear she gets more senile with age. Stepping into the bathroom, I carefully start stripping off my now gooey clothes. Fuck this is gross. Turning the water on hot enough to scald the devil and stepping into the warmth raining down, I groan happily. “Ooooh this is better than sex.” It’s glorious.

Not that I remember what sex feels like. Corin never wanted to touch me after having Vivian; not that I wanted him to, since he couldn’t keep his pencil dick out of random ass women. Shit I need a vibrator, now that I don’t have dick face controlling everything I do. I’m definitely thinking about ordering myself one, though I doubt this town has a sex shop.

Thirty minutes and a whole bottle of shampoo later, the egg is finally out of my hair and I am no longer sticky. I quickly towel off and get dressed to find my kids. We spend the rest of the day exploring the house by playing hide and seek, the sound of little feet pattering and giggles echoing through the many halls before we end with the kids getting to swim in the glassed-in backyard pool. The entire day they just get to enjoy being kids and that was all I needed to make my heart swell with joy to watch.
