“He’s not worth getting in trouble with the law. Although I wouldn’t mind seeing him with a black eye or two.”

Leaning my head back so I can see her face better, I say seriously, “It’s not too late. I can pay him a visit in jail.”

Her smile is soft as she rocks to her toes and presses her lips against mine. The kiss is short and sweet before she pulls back.

“As much as I appreciate the gesture, I’m going to pass. Phillip will eventually get what’s coming to him. I firmly believe in karma.”

Dropping my arms from around her waist, I lace our fingers together and pull her over to the leather couch against the wall. I sit and tug her hand until she’s forced to sit on my lap. Her skirt rides up when she straddles my thighs, tempting me to veer away from the conversation we need to have.

I lay my hands on the top of her thighs, and she curls her fingers over my shoulders.

“What deal was Phillip talking about?” I ask her quietly.

She lets out a tired breath, her expression revealing just how stressful this situation has been on her. Her head falls forward, so her eyes no longer meet mine. I watch as her tongue peeks out to swipe across her bottom lip. The move is a tell I’ve noticed Penelope does when she’s nervous.

After a moment, she lifts her eyes back to mine. My heart stutters at the shame and remorse that fills her expression.

“Can we talk about this later? I need to have a meeting with my brother and sisters. Phillip isn’t going to let this go, and I need to warn them. There are things they need to know.” She slides her fingers into my hair and begins playing with the ends. “Right now, I just want to forget.”

I tuck a piece of hair behind her ear, letting my finger linger on her cheek. “Sure, baby. We can wait.”

Her face relaxes. “Thank you.”

Applying pressure on the back of her head, I pull her forward until her head lays on my shoulder and her face is buried in my neck.

As tough as Penelope likes people to think she is—and in many ways she is—I’m glad she feels comfortable enough to show me her vulnerable side. I get the feeling she doesn’t reveal that side of herself often, even to her family.

It goes to show I was right all along. Penelope and I were always meant to be together.
