Chapter 2

KAI

When lunch time rolls around,I stop in the break room and grab two bottles of water from the fridge, along with two containers of food I put in there this morning. After warming them both in the microwave, I leave the room. Maggie, Penelope’s secretary, is on lunch as well, so her desk is empty when I walk past it. Penelope’s door is closed, but I know she’s behind it. Knowing it’ll bug the woman, I don’t bother knocking before I’m pushing the door open and kicking it closed behind me.

Her gaze jerks away from her laptop to glare at me. I fucking love when Penelope gets pissed. The sparks of fire in her green eyes and the way her body becomes rigid gets me hard faster than any other woman I’ve encountered.

Penelope is a hard ass. I’m not sure if the woman even knows what the word fun means. She rarely smiles, and laughs even less. She’s a strict and assertive boss and expects her employees to be the same. It’s one of the reasons Adair Marks PR has done so well, and I admire Penelope for how successful she is.

I can’t wait to tame the fire inside her. She’s always so stiff and controlled. It makes my blood run hot when I think about forcing her to submit to me. She won’t give up control easily, and I look forward to the process of her surrender.

“What are you doing?” she asks, her eyes still narrowed in irritation. “You should be at lunch.”

I grin as I hold up the containers. “I am.”

I plop down in the chair in front of her desk and pull the lids off.

“It’s inappropriate to take your lunch in my office.” Her gaze flickers to the door. “Especially with the door closed. It’s bound to start rumors.”

I lift a shoulder. “I don’t give two shits about what people think or say. Besides, the rumors will eventually be true.”

“You’re delusional,” she responds, her tone incredulous.

Ignoring her assessment, I say, “Also, since I brought lunch for the both of us, I need to be in your office in order to feed you.”

“You brought me lunch?”

I give her a grin. “Yep.”

She holds up a half-eaten granola bar. “I have my own lunch.”

“That shit is not lunch.” I move one of the containers across her desk in front of her and drop a fork on top of the lid. “This is lunch.”

She eyes the container warily, like she’s waiting for it to explode or something. “What is it?”

“Chicken and dumplings.” I stab a dumpling and a piece of chicken with my fork and shove it into my mouth. “Hmm… and it’s damn good.”

It takes her a moment, in which time she watches me chew, before she grabs her fork and gingerly picks up a bite. Her eyes widen as she slowly savors the taste.

“Wow. That is good.” She takes another bite. “What brand of dumplings did you use?”

“None. They’re homemade.”

Her fork pauses halfway to her mouth and shock registers on her face. “You made the dumplings yourself?”

“Yes. It’s my mother’s recipe.” I push one of the water bottles toward her. “Is it so shocking that I know how to cook?”

“Honestly? Yes. It’s not often a boy your age knows how to cook, other than macaroni and cheese or microwavable dinners.”

“Man.”

Her brows pinch. “Excuse me?”

“A man my age. I haven’t been a boy for several years now.”

“I hate to break it to you, Kai, but it’s going to take me some time to get used to seeing you as a grown man.”

She’s lying and she damn well knows it. I’m not the only one who feels the strong attraction between us. She can say otherwise, until she’s blue in the face, but I’ve seen the way she looks at me when she thinks no one is watching. She’s far from seeing me as a boy. Her brain may be trying to tell her I’m still a kid, but her body knows differently.
