“Swear you won’t do anything like that again.”

I open my mouth to tell Harley I can’t make that promise, but Camila stops me by taking my other hand and squeezing it. “No more putting us above yourself. We’re all equally important.”

“Fine,” I finally say when they both raise their brows expectantly. “But how about we avoid any and all situations where we have to make that decision?”

“Deal,” Camila says with a laugh.

Just then, a squad car pulls up behind Spencer’s vehicle and two officers get out.

An arm wraps around me from behind, and I’m tugged back against a firm chest. Kai’s breath fans across my ear as he sets his chin on my shoulder.

“We’ll be having a serious conversation later about the protective stunt you pulled,” he whispers in my ear.

With my lips tipped up, I turn my head and place a kiss on his cheek. “Are you going to punish me for it?”

“You bet your ass. By the time I get done with you, you wouldn’t dream about putting you and our baby in harm’s way again.”

I turn around in his arms so I can see him better. “I’ve been protecting my siblings since I was a child. It’s going to be a hard habit to break, and I’m sorry, but that need will never fully go away.”

He stares down into my eyes. “I don’t expect it to, and I would never ask you to curb that need, but, baby, when it comes to your physical safety, you step the fuck back. You’ll not only be saving yourself, but you’ll be saving me too.”

Looking into his eyes and seeing the barely hidden pain at the thought of something happening to me, I give him a solemn nod. “I will. I promise.”

He drops his head and gives me a slow kiss. “I love you,” he murmurs against my mouth.

“I love you,” I say right back.
