Landing Amelia Bells as a client would mean an increase in commission, which also meant more money to rent the studio space downstairs where all of the nice sewing machines were. I loved my rickety little machine that I had at home, but it was nothing compared to the commercial machines that Poleman’s kept for clothing alterations. Could I have probably asked Ric for the money to rent the space? Yes, 100%, in fact, he hated it when Ididn’task him for things. But I was a grown adult, and I wanted to pay for things myself without my older-brother-turned-psuedo-father paying for all of my expenses.

On the other hand, Zoey wouldn’t look kindly on whichever person replaced her as Bells’ stylist. Zoey was the self-proclaimed Queen Bee of the stylist team. She generally got the best contracts and also took care of most of the long-term clients. I couldn’t help but wonder what she’d done to get booted by Amelia Bells. By taking the contract, I was opening myself up to become the object of Zoey’s hatred when, before, we’d had a generally friendly relationship. I wasn’t usually one to rock the boat, I never got angry, and I always smiled. It was what people expected from me, so that was what I gave them. Maddie Zhao was a cheerful, bubbly woman who didn’t like to make people angry, but Madeline? Madeline was ambitious. Madeline wanted to use the commercial sewing machines and also show that she had skill as a stylist. But did I really want to piss Zoey off and potentially make my life in the office a living hell? Not to mention the fact that I was supposed to go out with her and some of the other stylists tonight....

I nibbled my lower lip as I thought about it before meeting June’s icy blue eyes, “I’ll do it.”

It was Friday, so maybe the news would at least wait until Monday to break, and I could enjoy one last night out as one of the girls.

A pleased smile curved across June’s face, and she leaned over the desk to get a better look at me. “You do understand that it could potentially cause issues within the office, right? You’re usually pretty sweet and don’t like people to be angry with you.”

“I want to have more consistent high-end clients. It isn’t my fault that Zoey was fired.” I replied firmly.

“Good.” June leaned back, her attention going from me back to the paperwork that was in front of her. “I like this new cutthroat Maddie, it makes you less boring. Close the door on your way out.”

She was clearly dismissing me, and I wasn’t going to stick around to attract any of her ire. Leaving the office and closing the door behind me, I glanced to the left, and then to the right, to see if anyone was watching, and did a little happy dance. I could already hear the whirr of the sewing machines downstairs in my head, and excitement filled my body at the chance of finally being able to work on bigger projects.
