“What?” Rio jerked away from me, his dark eyes angry. “What the fuck do you mean save the baby? No, save Madeline first.”

The doctor looked between the two of us, confused.

“Ri...she made me promise to save the baby.” My voice cracked as all of the trauma of the night finally caught up with me.

The doctor, probably seeing that we needed a moment, just nodded. “We will do our best to save both of them, I’ll keep you updated.” With that he turned and headed in the direction that they’d taken Madeline, leaving Rio and me alone in the quiet hallway.

Tears were freely streaming down Rio’s face as he stared down at his blood covered hands and front. “They were right there Marcus, right in front of us, and we couldn’t protect them.”

“I know,” I pulled him into a hard hug and felt his shoulders shake with loud sobs that filled the hallway. “Everything will be okay.” I assured him hollowly, but I knew that he could feel my uncertainty through the bond that had suddenly gone quiet on two ends. It left Rio and I alone, connected only by the incredibly thin thread of our bond with Madeline.

The truth was that I didn’t know if anything would ever be okay ever again.
