Chapter 8

KYLE

My wolf growled in my chest, desperate to get out. He wanted to howl at the injustice of it all.

How could it be possible that Monique was Xander’s fated mate...andmine? That wasn’t how the whole fated mates’ thing worked.

But as she stared at me, every single part of me knew it was true. She wasmine. Not because she was my Alpha’s mate, but because she wasmyfated mate... independent of Xander.

“Kyle?” Monique whispered, meeting my gaze with a question in her expression.

I nodded, because I couldn’t lie. Not to her. “Yes, Monique. You’remyfated mate as well as Xander’s. I have no idea how that’s possible, but it’s true.”

Her eyes welled up, then a tear slid down her beautiful face.

I jumped to my feet. “You’re crying.”

It was a ridiculous thing to say, as it was obvious to all of us.

Is it because of me? She didn’t cry when she found out Xander was her mate.

Horror raced through me at the thought she might not want me at all.

Then she laughed and swiped at the tears on her face. “I’m just a little... overwhelmed, that’s all.”

“It’s not because of... me?” I asked.

She shook her head and hurried over to where I was standing, but halted before she reached me. She stood still, as if waiting for something from me. I reached out for her hand. She didn’t resist. Instead, she took my hand and stepped closer, and then lifted her face for me.

I didn’t hesitate. I pulled her against my body and kissed her, hard.

She made a soft little moaning sound, so I wrapped my arms around her waist and tugged her tighter.

A warning growl rolled in from behind me, but I ignored my Alpha. He’d kissed her first, and now it was my turn. I wasn’t stopping just because he was uncomfortable.

He hadn’t evenwaitedfor me.

When I pressed deeper, Monique’s lips opened and I lapped at her with my tongue.

God, she tasted perfect.

Another, louder growl reverberated through the room. Monique pulled away, breaking our kiss.

She glanced at Xander then back to me, her eyes dark with worry. “This is going to get really complicated, isn’t it?”

I clenched my jaw as my wolf rose, begging to take over and let him shift. But I pushed him down. “Yeah. I think it is.”

We turned to face Xander, whose face was blazing as his human side warred with his shifter.

“Xander?” Monique held out a hand and drew him closer. “How about we eat? Will you both do that, for me?”

She released our hands and slid into her chair. Then she sat waiting, tapping her fingertips on the tabletop.

I can do this. Forher, I can do this.

I glared at my Alpha and he glared right back. We both sat, and I reached for a sandwich, the bread soft and fresh between my fingers.

I tore off a bite and chewed, not taking my gaze off Xander. I tried to hold onto my annoyance, but the sweet bread and tasty chicken filling wore down my resolve.
