Chapter Twenty

MAVERICK

Ishowered, got dressed and was just seconds away from exiting the locker room. Which meant I was seconds away from the beginning of my journey to sneak to Madison’s apartment where I could forget about hockey and life for a little while.

Or all night.

As I reached for the locker room door, it swung open.

I stood eye level with Alonso.

The man had quite the scary look to himself.

I never really cared much about that kind of stuff, but when I looked at Alonso all I could think about was Madison.

My mind loved it.

I suddenly felt like Abel or Lay.

Hey, dude, I’m sleeping with your daughter!

Hey, Alonso, guess where your daughter slept last night? On my dick!

Hey, dude, Alonso, hope you don’t mind but I’ve been-

“Maverick,” Alonso’s deep voice said. He grabbed my shoulders. “Just the guy I’ve been looking for.”

“Oh yeah?” I asked.

In reality, I thought,Oh shit.

“You and I need to have a little chat,” he said. He looked around the locker room. “I think we’re good right here. Don’t you?”

“If you say so,” I said. “I’ve got nothing to hide.”

Why the hell did I just say that?

Alonso pointed to a bench. “Let’s sit and talk then.”

“You know, there’s probably more comfortable places around here,” I said. “Offices. Comfortable chairs. Suites.”

“I miss the game,” Alonso said. “I miss the locker room. The environment of it all. This whole suit and tie game gets stuffy.”

“Why did you stop playing?”

“Got too old,” Alonso said. “No matter what anyone says, you always end up too old. You can stay in shape, eat right and look great, but eventually the game passes you by. That’s the worst feeling in the world. Well, one of the worst feelings.”

Alonso looked at me and his face dropped.

I had no idea what was going to happen next here.

Where this conversation was going to go.

Did he want to know if Madison and I were just screwing? Or if we were serious? And even that word -serious- what did that word actually mean? We weren’t living together or openly dating. Then again, if this wholeI’m-sleeping-with-the-new-boss’s-daughtersituation wasn’t happening, what would Madison and I be doing then?

Would we even be together?

Was it just the thrill of beingwrongyet feelinggoodwhile being…wrong?
