Chapter Twenty-Three

MADISON

Islammed my phone down and walked away.

I made it all of five steps before I stopped and looked back at my phone.

As I bit my bottom lip, I swallowed hard.

That sort of felt a little extreme on the phone with Maverick.

For a lot of reasons.

I didn’t expect him to call me. Ever.

And I definitely didn’t expect him to call me just to talk. Or to check on me. Or to tell me what he was doing. Or to talk about that emotional stuff.

I used theperiod cardagain to get out of going to the hockey game tonight.

I just couldn’t do it at the moment.

Seeing the signs, hearing the chants and thinking about what was going on…

I turned and ran back to get my phone.

I called Zoe.

She picked up on the second ring.

I heard the background noise right away and knew she was at a club getting ready for a show.

“Are you coming?” Zoe yelled.

“No,” I said. “Sorry. I’m working.”

“You’re not working,” Zoe said. “Why are you calling? What’s wrong?”

“Just wanted to wish you good luck,” I said.

“That’s a lie! But I love you for it! I’ve got to go.”

Zoe hung up on me.

So I called Eva.

I knew she’d be home right now.

Sitting in front of her laptop with a cup of coffee, thinking about monsters, serial killers and violent ways to end someone’s life.

“What’s wrong?” Eva asked instead of ahello.

“Nothing.”

“You never call me.”

“Zoe is at a show.”

“Ah, crap. That was tonight.”
