“You knew about it?”

“We both did, Madison. She texted us a few days ago.”

“Oh.”

“You’re distracted, huh? Is there a certain goalie in your bed right now?”

“No. He’s not here. I might not see him ever again. Well, other than during hockey stuff.”

“What did you do?”

“Me? Why is it me?”

“You always do this, Madison,” Eva said. “You’ll sabotage something and then want Zoe and me to come over so you can justify it. So go ahead. Justify it. Sell it to me.”

“You realize how dumb this is, right?” I asked.

“What? Your inability to commit?”

“Not that,” I growled. “The thing with Maverick. Look, if he wasn’t a hockey player, it would be different. This is just too risky. And if something happened and we got caught…”

“What? What happens then?”

“You know what happens,” I said. “The last time…”

Eva let out a groan. “I love you, Madison. I really do love you.”

“Now you’re going to crap on me.”

“I’m going to tell you the truth.”

“Can you skip the truth? Can’t you just be there for me? Let me whine?”

“Sure,” Eva said. “Go ahead. Whine. Let’s hear it.”

Well, here’s the deal.

This insanely sexy, rich hockey player called me just to say hello to me. I think he wanted to hear my voice because he got some bad news. Or he’s going through something with his coach. He could have just gotten something to drink or fucked some other woman, you know? But he called me. He wanted to talk to me.

What nerve, right?

“Never mind,” I said. “It’ll make me sound pathetic.”

“That’s not hard to do,” Eva said with a laugh.

“You know what? I’m hanging up on you. And I’m calling Maverick back.”

“You are so wild, Madison,” Eva said.

Her sarcastic tone pissed me off.

It was well deserved though.

“Goodbye, Eva,” I said.

“It’s not hanging up if you say goodbye to the person!”

I ended the call.
