“Clean what out?” I asked.
“You know, if a guy doesn’t shoot a load, it weighs him down,” Lay said.
“What about you, Riff?” I asked. “Last time I checked, you missed a few passes. You missed a big check which led to a goal. Maybe you’re the one who needs toclean things out.”
“Trust me, I’m fine,” Riff said with a wink.
“What, are you fucking someone in secret?” I asked.
Careful, Mav. He can call you out for the same thing right now.
“I’m just trying to help,” Riff said. “Lay is too overbearing. You’re too quiet, Mav. I’m the perfect guy for this mission.”
“Mission,” I said.
“Are we going out or what?” Lay asked. “I’m feeling it right now.”
“I’m feeling my bed right now,” I said.
Both Lay and Riff looked at me.
And they both started to laugh.
I sighed. “Okay, fine. That one came out a little wrong.”
“You’re a wimp,” Riff said.
“What the fuck do you know about my life?” I asked Riff. I stepped toward him. “You’re fucking someone on the side, huh? How do you know I’m not?”
“Something is different about you,” Lay said.
“You know what? I’m going to enjoy this beer and get some sleep.”
“If Mav is out, then I am too,” Riff said.
He swiped another beer from the six pack.
“What am I going to do then?” Lay asked.
“Go bother Reid,” I said. “Or Matias.”
“This is… terrible,” Lay said.
“Come on, Lay,” Riff said. He opened my hotel room door. “Let the moody princess get some sleep. He probably has to change his tampon too.”
“I can see why Remi wants to put your head through a wall,” I said.
“You don’t know shit about Remi and me,” Riff said. “Don’t ever bring it up again.”
Lay grabbed what was left of the six pack of beer. He looked at his phone. “They’re waiting.Angela. Shayna. Katie.”
For a second I almost felt guilty.
“Hey, Lay,” I called out.
Lay looked back at me. “Yeah?”
“You know who you are,” I said. “Right? You’re Finlay Diniski. From the damnApple Cats. You’re at center ice at the start of every game. You win face offs, fights, and you know how to score. On and off the ice. Three beautiful women. One of you. Seems fair to me.”
