Maverick took a deep breath. “Fine. It matters.”

“Talk to me about Lay.”

“We have to trust him.”

“Trust him?” I asked.

“No choice.”

“I can get him traded.”

“No.”

“I can kill him.”

“No.”

“Mav…”

“He’s not going to say anything.”

“How do you know?” I asked.

“I don’t know.”

“I don’t like this.”

“I don’t either,” Maverick said.

When his phone started to ring, he looked and groaned.

“You have to go,” I said.

“Back to the restaurant,” he said. “I ran out earlier.”

“What are you going to say?” I asked.

“I’ll grab Lay and make up an excuse.”

“So now you’re lying to all your friends, right? Your team.Your family.”

“You’re doing the same thing.”

“Not really. My friends know about us.”

“They haven’t said a word. So pretend Lay is the same.”

“The thought of Lay as a friend or anything else makes me uneasy.”

Maverick laughed. “I guess I have to agree, sweetie.”

He touched my cheek and kissed me goodbye.

Before the door shut behind him, I had my phone in my hand.

I needed Zoe and Eva.

“What I’m goingto tell you… no judgement. Got it?”
