Chapter Forty

MADISON

Now I was the one knocking on Maverick’s door.

Late at night.

Needing to talk.

He knew I was coming because I texted him.

The door opened a second after I knocked.

Maverick stood in jeans and a t-shirt.

He looked so good I felt like asking him to put on a hoodie or ten blankets.

Or maybe I should have just turned around, ran out of there and went home.

It wasn’t my intention to end up here.

“So here you are, sweetie,” Maverick said.

“Yeah,” I said.

“Can I get you a drink?”

“Please.”

Maverick led the way to the kitchen.

I glanced around the apartment, realizing this was only the second time I was in his apartment.

The extent of our relationship (or whatever this was) revolved around him sneaking into my apartment building and my apartment.

“This place is nice,” I said.

Maverick looked back at me. “Came to just throw out some small talk?”

“No,” I said.

Maverick took two glasses out of a glass cabinet and poured us each a drink.

“We can go sit in the living room if you’d like,” he offered. “I promise I won’t turn on the fireplace. I won’t even sit within ten feet of you if that’s what you want.”

Without thinking, I grabbed for his shirt.

We both looked at my hand.

I opened my grip.

But I wasn’t done yet.

I grabbed for his hand.

How’s that any better?

I wasn’t sure.
