Chapter Forty-One

MAVERICK

Isat and watched the team exit the locker room.

Coach lingered behind.

He looked back at me. “Ready?”

“You know I am,” I said.

“You okay?”

“No,” I said. I stood up. “How are you doing, Coach?”

“The same as you,” he said. “But we’re both here. For a reason, right?”

“That’s right,” I said.

I went out to the ice.

I was in no mood for anything or anyone.

In reality I should have faked an injury and just skipped the game.

When I looked at the schedule and realized who we were playing…

Lay skated by me and swatted me with his stick.

“Cheer up, fucker,” he called out. “If you’re single, that’s a great thing. I’ll buy you a lap dance later. Deal?”

“Go fuck yourself, Lay,” I said.

I turned and threw my goalie stick at Riff.

“What the hell?” Riff yelled at me.

I dropped my gloves and skated toward him.

“I wasn’t fucking ready for that shot,” I yelled.

“I knew that,” Riff said. “What the hell is your problem?”

“You are,” I said. “I’m going to kick your ass.”

I reached for Riff, knowing he had no issues throwing his gloves to the ice and taking a swing.

We were tangled up in a second.

Then Remi and Lay were there to break us apart.
