“Lies? What lies?”
“You have no fucking clue what could happen next,” I said. “Whether she responds to treatments or not. Whether she needs surgeries or not. Whether she even decides to go through with it all or not. Or what if it goes away and then comes rushing right back later? You have no idea what could happen here.”
“You’re right, I don’t,” Maverick said. “But I’m not going to stand there and talk about everything that could go wrong. Coach knows what could go wrong. He had no problem saying it. Telling us that his wife is going to die.”
I stepped back. “I’m sorry to hear that, Mav. Okay, we’re good here then, right?”
“With what?”
“You showed up. We fucked. You can leave now, okay?”
“Leave? What is this? You’re kicking me out?”
“Yes.”
“Over what? Because of Coach’s wife?”
“Just go, Mav,” I said. “I have to get some sleep. I have an early morning. I have things to do. I’m going to be busy.”
“Oh, wow,” he said. “You’re just going to start spitting lies now? I touched on a nerve, didn’t I? Why is that? What is it, sweetie? Is it the cancer thing?”
“Please, just leave,” I said.
“Madison…”
“I said to leave!” I yelled. “Now!”
Maverick showed his hands and nodded.
“Okay,” he said. “That’s what you want. Sorry for bringing up something serious here then.”
Maverick turned and walked to the apartment door.
In my heart I screamed for him not to leave. I screamed his name and wanted him to stay.
But he left.
Because I told him to leave.
My eyes welled with tears. I quickly went back to the bedroom to find my phone.
As I sat on the edge of the bed, I caught myself shaking.
This was why I needed to have distance with Maverick.
It was fun to flirt, screw and have fun.
Anything else needed to be kept away.
I sent a text to Zoe and Eva.
Two words.
Bad night.
They knew what that meant, and I knew they’d be over as fast as they could.
While I waited, I typed three different texts to Maverick.
I deleted all three.
Screwing each other in secrecy was one thing.
But getting any more serious… could not happen.
