‘I think we’re lost.’

‘Hold on. There are lights up ahead.’

Roman charged forward. She followed him and, to her surprise, he pushed aside a palm frond and revealed the view.

The hotel was not on the beach but nestled above it. They’d stumbled upon one of the many outdoor lounges with a privileged view of the ocean rippling in the moonlight. It wasn’t a scary, deserted spot where a girl could end up murdered. Far from it. A few other couples were relaxing, lounging on daybeds and sipping cocktails. Paradise found!

Roman turned to her. ‘What do you think? Should we stay a while?’

Samantha took off skipping to one of the circular lounge beds, a strong breeze ruffling her hair, and fell onto it, landing on her back, arms flung wide. It was Roman’s turn to follow. She heard him mutter, ‘Guess we’re staying a while.’

‘We’d be crazy not to. It’s gorgeous out here.’

He approached her, grinning. ‘But you were in such a hurry to get away from me.’

‘Don’t push your luck.’ She sat up and drew her knees to her chest. ‘This is perfect. I’ve had such a stressful day.’

He turned sombre. ‘Sorry if I made your day more stressful.’

Just when she’d given up hope of ever getting a sincere apology from the man, he delivered.

‘Anthony has a lot on his mind,’ he continued. ‘I don’t want him thinking that I’m starting trouble with his bride’s best friend.’

Samantha was willing to bet that honour and distinction went to Jen. ‘I’m her oldest friend. Jen has replaced me in the best friend department. I’ve been demoted.’

‘If it’s any consolation, Naomi is Anthony’s whole world now. There’s little room for anyone else.’

‘Circle of life,’ Samantha mused.

Here they were, two insiders on the outside.

Samantha extended a hand, inviting him onto her lounge bed. There was space enough for two.
