Holding her tight, I say, “Thank you for all your help today. You were amazing.”

Shannon steps away from me, suddenly looking embarrassed. “It was my pleasure.”

Leaning in, I kiss hers and then Todd’s cheek. Kris takes my hand and pulls me out of the house to the waiting limousine. There’s a small group of friends out here, all clapping and cheering.

The door to the car is opened, and as I get in, my eyes lock with the man who’s holding the door. It’s the man who threatened me in New York, Luis Rivera.

He smiles at me, and my blood runs cold. I stumble, but Kris is there to catch me. Rivera nods at me as Kris helps me into the car.

“Are you okay?” Kris puts a hand on my cheek. “You’ve gone white as a ghost.”

“J-just nerves.”

He entwines his fingers with mine. “Of me? Of us?”

Putting the back of his hand to my lips, I kiss it. “Never. I think I’m a little tired… it’s been a big day.”

The lies fall from my mouth so easily. I should tell him. He deserves to know. So many times I’ve replayed his accident in my head and have tried to tell him about the man. Now, Luis Rivera has found me.

Found us.
