“To make sure it’s up to Kris Livingston standards?”

Kris smirks at me. “Yes, if you must know.”

He’s pretending to be upset, but I know he’s only teasing. For one of his movies, he was given a trailer that had no water, and the electricity would fade in and out. It made for a very unpleasant three months.

My cell phone rings, and I take it out of my purse. The caller ID shows it is Todd.

“Hey, handsome, how’s Boothbay?”

“Hey, Athena. Actually, Shannon and I are still at your home here in LA.”

“What?”

Todd chuckles. “We decided to stay on for a little while.”

“Don’t you have work? And how can Shannon leave TB? Doesn’t he need her?”

Todd laughs harder. “It’s winter in Boothbay, which means no tourists. For me, that means making sure the local kids don’t terrorize Mrs. Shaw, and for Shannon, it means it’s slower than a herd of turtles stampeding through peanut butter.”

Laughing, I agree with them. Boothbay is lonely in the winter. It’s bitterly cold, and there’s not a lot to do. TB’s café relies on the local fishermen and residents, and it’s only through summer he makes a lot of money and has to budget for the rest of the year. Not paying Shannon will be a godsend.

“Can Shannon afford to stay out here?”

“Well, that’s part of the reason we’re calling. Is it okay if we stay in your guesthouse?”

“Yes, of course, it is!”

“Well, then we can both afford to stay. When are you coming home?”

Looking at Kris, I ask, “How long are we going to be on the set? Todd and Shannon are staying in our guesthouse for a while like an extended vacation.”

“We shouldn’t be more than two hours, three tops.”

Knowing he’ll probably want to check in with Andy Westin for longer, I say, “We’ll be home late tonight. How’s Lulu?”

“She misses her momma.”

Smiling into the cell phone, I say, “See you three later. Love you.”

“Love you too. Say hi to Kris.”

Todd hangs up, and I look at Kris smiling at me.

“What?”

“You’re happy they’re here.”

“Yes. Is it okay?”

“Honey, they’re in the guesthouse. It’s perfectly fine. Besides, they make you happy, so that makes me happy.”

The drive to the studio only takes us an hour, which is good for this time of day. The driver seems to know exactly where to take us. Kris gets out of the car first and holds out a hand to help me. There’s no one around as we make our way through the lot and into one of the buildings.

In the distance, I can see Andy Westin talking to someone. Kris is eager to start filming, and I can see he wants to speak to Andy but doesn’t want to leave me by myself.

“Ahh, Kris?”
