We aren’t safe here.

“Okay, let’s pack a bag. We can get in the car right now and drive to the house in Big Bear.”

“I don’t know…”

“I do. No one knows we own it. I bought it years ago, and I’ve only been there a handful of times. We’ll be safe. One road in, one road out, and it’s on the top of a mountain. We’ll see them coming.”

“Okay. What about Todd and Shannon?”

“I’ll let Todd know where we’re going. Rivera has no idea who they are. They should be safe, but I’ll tell them to check into a hotel to be sure.”

“I’ll go pack for us. You go find Todd and tell him.”

Kissing her softly on the lips, I stare into her beautiful green eyes. “Okay.” Cupping her face, I repeat the vows I told her on our wedding day. “Where you go, I follow.”

“Always,” she whispers.

Walking through the grounds to the guesthouse, I call Mr. Silverback.

“Kris?”

I’m surprised it goes straight through to him and not one of his assistants.

“Mr. Silverback?”

“Yes.”

Regaining my composure, I say, “Sorry, I wasn’t expecting you to answer.”

“I’ve told reception to put you through to me, no matter the time or what I’m doing. Is there a problem?”

“I’m not coming in. I’m leaving for our home in Big Bear.”

Mr. Silverback makes a huffing noise, then says, “I don’t think that’s wise.”

“It might not be, but I want Athena safe.”

“Kris, we need to document everything if we’re going to win any kind of case against the studio.”

“I don’t care.”

“Fine. We have that address on file. Call me if anything further happens and if you have any injuries, get Athena to take pictures.” He sounds resigned, as though he’s talking to a child.

“Thank you.”

“Hmm… take care of yourself.”

He ends the call, and I put my cell phone in my pocket. Clearly, he thinks I’m making the wrong decision, but Athena’s well-being is my only concern.
