Shannon levels me with a glare. “Yes, Clive. Clive, thebodyguard.”
Claude holds a hand to his chest and raises his eyebrows. “You go, girl!”
“Fine.”
I pull out my cell phone again and walk a few steps away from Shannon and Claude.
“Hey, Todd.”
“Clive, we can’t contact Kris or Athena, and they haven’t checked in.”
“Where are they?”
Putting a hand on my hip, I say, “They were going up to the house in Big Bear.”
“Hang on a sec.” I can hear him moving around, and it takes him a minute to come back to me. “Todd?”
“Yeah?”
“Both their cell phones are pinging in the Big Bear area.”
“How the hell do you know that?”
Clive laughs. “I was Kris’ bodyguard for months. Sometimes celebrities don’t want a bodyguard around them, so I always put tracking devices on their cell phones. Just in case things go pear-shaped. It’s simply a precaution so I can follow them from a distance without them knowing. I don’t get paid the big bucks to sit on my hands and do nothing.”
“Okay, so they’re at Big Bear, that’s good, right?”
“Except you said they aren’t answering their phones, so that’s bad.”
Scrubbing a hand over my face, I agree with him. “Yeah, you’re right. Feel like coming for a drive?”
“I’ll pick you up.”
“Wait! We’re not at the house. We’re at The Argyle in Marina Del Rey.”
“Why are you two staying at a hotel when Kris has a perfectly good guesthouse?”
“Come pick me up, and I’ll explain on the way.” Turning around, I find Shannon and Claude right beside me. “Jesus! Are you trying to scare me?”
“Why would us standing next to you scare you?” asks Claude.
“You’renotgoing without me,” states Shannon.
“Clive is on his way.”
Shannon looks at Claude. “You keep him here while I go change. Don’t let them leave without me.” She strides away and whatever people see on her face makes them move out of her way.
“Claude, can you look after Shannon tonight? Keep her here and safe?”
“Honey, did you hear what that woman just said to you, I mean me? Honestly, I’m not brave enough to go against her.” He straightens up to his full height and looks down at me. “And honey, I’m a hell of a man.”
Sighing, I look up at the ceiling. “It’s going to be an interesting drive.”
Claude claps his hands. “I can’t wait to see how this all ends!”
“What?”
“I’m coming.”
