“No, you’re not.”

“Oh, come on. A hot movie star, a famous author, and they’re missing. This is the stuff movies are made of. I have to come to see what happens.”

“Claude, nothing is going to happen. I’m being overly cautious. We’re going to drive to Big Bear to find them in bed doing what newly married couples do, I’m going to be horribly embarrassed, and then we’re going to have to turn around and come home.”

He flips his dreads over one shoulder and puts a hand on his hip. “I’ve got nothing better to do.”

“No.”

“Okay, let me word this another way. I’m single, you’re here alone. We could get to know each other a little, deputy.” Claude leans in and whispers, “Maybe we could test out your handcuffs.”

My dick goes hard as I turn to stare into his deep brown eyes. “W-What?”

“You heard me.”

My gaze drops to his mouth, and he licks his lips, which makes my dick harder. “This is a bad idea.”

“I hope so,” purrs Claude.

I want so badly to kiss him, but now isn’t the time or the place.

“What if I promise to call you when we’re back?”

“Deputy, I’ve been waiting on you to call me, and you haven’t.”

It’s true. When he was in Boothbay, we hit it off, but Claude lives in LA, thousands of miles away on the other side of the country.

“Fine.”

Claude claps his hands and hugs me. “Road trip!”

My cell phone rings, and I pull it out of my pocket. It’s Clive.

“Are you here?” I ask.

“I’m about ten minutes out. Can you meet me out front?”

“Yes, and there will be three of us.”

“Did you get re-enforcements?” asks Clive.

“More like I got out-voted.”

“Okay, my man, see you soon.”

Looking up at Claude, he’s not watching me, so I follow his line of vision. Shannon is walking toward us dressed completely in black—tights, T-shirt, and boots. Plus, she’s carrying a baseball bat.

“Dang, that girl knows how to command a room.”

Smiling at her as she approaches, I agree. “She sure does.”

“Okay, I’m ready. Let’s do this.”

“Shannon, where’d you get the bat?”

She holds it up. “This is Bertha, and she travels everywhere with me.”

The bat looks as if it’s had a lot of use, and Shannon is staring at me as though it is the most normal thing in the world to carry around a baseball bat. Shaking my head, I gesture for them to head toward the front of the hotel.
