Chapter Twenty

Kris

Athena is holding onto me for dear life. Clive has done a sweep around the property, collected all the weapons, and made sure they were incapacitated if they weren’t dead.

We’re in the kitchen, well, what’s left of the kitchen. Lulu comes running in, her white fur a mass of burrs and dirt.

“Aww, Lulu, what happened to you?” asks Todd.

Clive walks into the room. “Have you called the police?”

“Not yet,” says Todd as he pulls a burr out of Lulu’s fur.

“Ahh, I don’t want to leave you guys in the lurch, but I don’t have permits for most of these guns, and…”

“And you need to go.” I embrace him. “Go. We’ll give you ten minutes before we call anyone.”

“Can you make it fifteen? I’ve got to jog down your driveway and then convince Claude he should come with me.”

“Claude?”

Todd clears his throat. “Remember Sophia’s hairstylist?”

“The one you liked?” asks Athena.

Todd nods. “Yeah, he waited down by the car.”

“Do you want to go with Clive?”

Todd looks pained but says, “No. The police will have questions, and I can help with the answers being in law enforcement.”

Pulling Athena back into my side, I say, “Get going, Clive. Tell Claude we’ll have him over for dinner, and we owe you, so yeah, fifteen minutes is the least we can do.”

Clive winks at me and leaves out the front door.

Looking at Todd, I ask, “How many were there?”

“I counted six.”

“All dead?”

“There’s one alive. Shannon is with him. You know she can be quite scary.”

“Luis Rivera?” Athena asks.

“We didn’t find him. He’s not one of the dead. If he was here, he’s long gone,” replies Todd.

Her face clouds over. I know she’s thinking that the nightmare isn’t going to end. Rubbing her arm, I try to reassure her, but I know as long as he lives, he’s not going to let us be.

“Do you have anything strong to drink?” asks Shannon. She’s still carrying around the Uzi, looking like she stepped out of the gun magazine,Loaded.

“I thought you were with the prisoner. And maybe you should give Todd the gun?” I suggest.

“He’s not going anywhere.” Shannon looks down at the gun, an eerie smile on her face. “Nope. It’s cool. I already have my cover story. I got the gun from one of them. No one will know where it came from. I’ve got this.” Shannon holds up the gun and smiles lovingly at it.

“Shannon, I don’t want the police shooting you by mistake.”

“They won’t,” she replies confidently and strolls out of the room.
