“I’ll make it happen.”

Thomas does an about-face and walks back outside. He’s gone less than five minutes, then returns.

“Okay, let’s go. I told them you’d be back in tomorrow to go over things again.”

“We can go?” asks Athena with Lulu tucked under her arm.

“Yes, my dear, you haven’t done anything wrong.” Thomas smiles. “You know this is going to work in our favor. The studio did nothing to protect you against this threat. In fact, they pulled your security detail.”

“How does this help us?” I ask.

“Kris, I’m thinking you’re going to get your movie back with a hefty increase in pay, or we could sue them for negligence. You tried to explain it to the great Andy Westin, and he ignored you. This is all going to work out nicely.”

Thomas Silverback looks so pleased with himself. He’s even rubbing his hands together.

“Thomas, can we go?” I ask.

He claps his hands together and says, “My limo is outside. We’ll take you wherever you want to go.”

Rising, I pull Athena up with me, and we walk out of our home. The camera flashes light up the night, and the media is asking questions as the police try to hold them back. Thomas opens the limousine door, and we all climb in.

His eyes flick to the dirty white bundle of fur in Athena’s lap. “Where to?”

“The closest hotel that allows dogs. We need sleep.”

He knocks on the screen between the driver and us, and it lowers.

“Yes, Mr. Silverback?”

“The nearest hotel.”

“Yes, sir, very good.”

The black glass goes back up, and the limousine pulls away.

The next day, I wake up and reach for Athena, but her side of the bed is empty. Immediately, I get out of bed to search for her and find her in the bathroom, drying her hair with Lulu sitting at her feet.

“Hey, sleepyhead.”

Putting my hands on either side of her face, I kiss her. “What time is it?”

“It’s nearly four.”

“In the afternoon?”

“Yep.”

“Jesus, the police must be frustrated with us.”

“I think they’re more frustrated with Mr. Silverback.”

Laughing, I say, “He’s the best. I’m sure he sold his soul to the devil a long time ago.”

A knock on our hotel door startles both of us.

“Wait here.”
