I rocked back on my heels. “How did you know?”

“It is a gift I have always possessed. Who is to say?” she said.

Then, the hooded woman lit a few candles on a low table and then motioned for me to sit on the floor in front of it. I did, trembling with anticipation and the sense that we were losing time.

“Where is he? Where’s Jett? I have to get to him. He needs help.”

She shushed me with a finger against her chapped lips. “The ships are close to landing now. Within the hour, they will disembark, that army Aldric has acquired.”

She stared into the flames flickering over the candles. I did the same and realized the wicks weren’t burning. The flames were suspended in the air above them—the candles remained unmelted.

Waving her hands over the flames, she made them grow bigger, and her soft grunt told me she saw something.

“What is it?” I whispered, leaning in.

“There is to be a battle. I see fire. Blood.”

“Whose blood?”

Again, she shushed me. I wanted to scream. Didn’t she know we were wasting time? Jett’s life hung in the balance. “The blood of many. Witch and Siren and Fae alike.”

Fae. Jett. “What’s happening to him?”

Her lips pulled down at the corners. “I am afraid… I see…”

“See what?” I breathed, straining to hear her quiet voice.

Her eyes narrowed. “He will die. This is what I see.”

“No. It can’t be.” My stomach twisted, my heart raced, and now there was nothing I wanted more than to get out of this hut and go to him. “I need to stop this.”

“There is no stopping what is already in motion, girl.” Her gaze landed on me from across the flickering flames. “Yet, all is not lost. You cannot lose hope.”

“How can you say that if you’re telling me—”

She swayed slightly, her gaze going unfocused like she was looking way past me. Into the future? “There is one, true enemy who holds Jett’s life. It is not who you believe it to be.”

“What can I do? I have to stop them.”

She snapped back into focus. “Go to the harbor. Hurry. In the fifth slip you will find a boat whose hull is painted blood red. The captain goes by the name Gilvath. He will take you across the water to Biryg. You may still have time.”

“Thank you.” I jumped up, ready to run. “Which direction do I go in to find the harbor?”

“Toward the setting sun,” she replied.

I took off running without a second thought. If the seer was right, I might still have time to save Jett. My love. My mate.
