My brain is working overtime to understand all that she’s told me. But honestly, after all that, I can’t seem to hate her anymore.

“Taj’s all yours, I promise,” she says to me.

“You’re pretty cool, Aurora,” I say. Grudging respect, that’s all I feel right now.

She laughs.

“Oh thank God. I thought you were going to hate me forever.”

“Sorry for the glares,” I tell her and she shrugs.

“We can be friends, right?”

“Of course,” I say nodding. It might not be immediately, but down the road, I could see us as friends.

“That’s nice. I’m going to leave now. I wanted to meet Taj’s friends but this seems like a close-knit group. I’ll just head home.”

I immediately feel bad. My friends must have been making her feel like an outsider for my sake. They’re not usually like that.

“You can stay,” I tell her but she shakes her head.

“No, it’s fine. I’ll head home. See you later, Petal.”

She walks away and by the time I get back to the living room, she’s gone. I rejoin the party and I’m finally able to have fun. Maybe it’s because Aurora isn’t beside Taj anymore but after my conversation with her, my heart feels a little lighter. Someone asks Brock his favorite part of Annabella’s body and his reply is her body which makes everyone laugh.

I’m still really angry at Taj though.

Alan ends the party when he throws up on the tiled floor. He definitely drank too much, we all did. Everyone disperses after that. When I stand to leave, I almost fall from the dizziness.

“Hey, I got you,” Taj says coming to grab my arm.

“G-g- aw-ayy,” I slur. He smirks.

“Nope, can’t have you falling on your face on my watch,” he says before literally sweeping me off my feet. He carries me bridal style and begins walking towards my room which thankfully isn’t too far away.

“You don’t seem drunk,” I mumble.

“I only drank a little,” he says.

I rest my head in the crook of his arm. He’s so much larger than me. I’m 5’9 which is pretty tall for a girl, while Taj is about 6’4, muscular and huge. He looks like he could break me with little effort and yet he carries me with all the tenderness in the world. I know for sure that he would break anyone who tried to hurt me. He’s protective of me. He cares for me but he refuses to admit his feelings for me. I’ve never met someone who confuses me as much as he does.

I’m tired of the not knowing.

Taj sets me gently on my bed and is about to leave but I grab the sleeve of his shirt.

“Wait,” I say quietly. He turns to look at me.

His brown eyes are guarded and wary, like he knows I’m about to ask him to do something difficult.

“Stay,” I say softly.

Taj gulps before shaking his head.

“I can’t,” he tells me.

He’s about to walk away again. I’m not sure where I get the strength but I pull him until he’s falling on top of me. He manages to stretch his arms out at the last second so he doesn’t crush me.

“Petal,” he starts.
