He sat on the foot of the bed. “Look how soft the mattress is.”

She blushed again. “Maybe you should go so I can get ready for bed.”

He stood up and kissed her softly. “Nothing would make me happier.”

She waited until he’d shut the door behind him and picked up her carpet bag. The man was…well, he was exactly what she needed. She could feel it.

Once she was in one of the nightgowns she’d brought from home, she found blankets and piled them onto the bed. The more she was covered with, the harder it would be for him to find her.

Finally, she climbed between the sheets, closing her eyes, and waiting for him. It seemed so strange to be in the bed of a man she’d known for only two days, but she didn’t think it mattered too terribly much how long she’d known him. She’d be nervous if they’d known one another for three years.

Lewis knocked on the door before entering the room. She didn’t answer, so he opened it a bit and peeked in to see if she was ready. After seeing her lying on one side of the bed, he opened the door, turning down the lamp before he started undressing.

Sydney tried not to look in his direction for fear she’d see something she shouldn’t by the light of the moon. Was it even late enough to go to sleep? She didn’t know, but if they went to bed early, perhaps she’d be able to get out of bed before noon the next day. She was still so tired from her trip.

Lewis slid into bed beside her and propped himself up on one elbow. “Sydney?”

Sydney turned to him, nodding. Remembering every word of what her mother had told her would happen on the wedding night. “The best way to get through it is to just spread your legs, lie back, and let him do what he will. Never act as if you enjoy it, or he will think you are a loose woman.”

Lewis stared at her, startled for a moment. “I would never think you’re a loose woman!”

She gasped, her hand going to cover her mouth. She hadn’t meant to repeat what her mother had said, aloud, to him! “My mother’s advice for the wedding night.”

“I’d like you to wipe that advice from your mind. We’re just going to start by kissing. I want you to enjoy everything we do together, so don’t ever worry I’ll think you’re a loose woman. That couldn’t happen.”

“I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to say it aloud.”

“Of course, you didn’t. But I’m glad you did. I understand things a little better now.”

He ran his hand over the top of the covers, realizing she’d piled as many on top of herself as she possibly could. “You have got to be hot,” he said, wondering just where all these blankets had been. How had she found them?

“I am. But I’m supposed to be modest even in bed with you.”

“That’s just silly. I’m the man who you’ll be waking up beside every day for the rest of your life. I’ll be the one who makes love with you and who gives you children.”

Lewis got out of bed and carefully peeled layer after layer off his new wife. When she was down to just the sheet, he climbed back in with her. “Isn’t that cooler?” He’d heard her talk about how hot it was there enough times that he knew she must have been sweating.

“Much.” She turned toward him in bed, no longer lying rigidly on her back with her hands fisted beside her. “Am I really allowed to like it?”

“Of course, you are. God made this pleasurable for both man and woman. He wouldn’t want you to not enjoy something he made pleasurable, would he?”

“How do you know all of this?” she asked.

“I just do.”

“Have you been to Hell’s Half Acre?” she asked, suddenly worried he was used to being with painted ladies, and he would be disappointed with her.

“I have not. But I have a father who will answer any question, and a brother who is married, who will do the same.” He paused. “Do you know what my father told me while I was waiting for you to change?”

“No, what?” She reached out and touched his bare shoulder, distracted by the sheer size of the muscles there.

He gathered her close. “He told me to treat you as I would want my sisters to be treated.”

“Was that good advice?” she asked.

“It was perfect. It told me that I need to be gentle, patient, and slow.” He kissed her softly, his hands slowly moving over her back. “And loving. So loving.” His lips left a trail of kisses from her lips to her ear. When he softly bit her earlobe, she gasped in surprise.

He chuckled, his hands moving to her breasts and stroking them, trying to make her want him just as much as he wanted her.
