“I sure hope so!” Alice replied. “And sisters-in-law if I have my way!”

Sydney shook her head as her new friend walked toward the top of the stairs, closing her door. Sleep was all she cared about.

She undressed to her bloomers and corset, untied the strings of her corset, and collapsed onto the bed. It was soft, but not cloyingly soft like her bed in Beckham. The window was open and a nice breeze was coming through the room. She was going to like Texas. There was no doubt in her mind about that.

As she drifted off to sleep, she thought about how horrid her life would have been if she’d married the owner of a brothel who spent all his time in it. Maybe jumping on a train and taking off across the country wasn’t the smartest thing she’d ever done.

But staying in Beckham and marrying her mother’s choice of beaus would have been the absolute worst thing she’d ever done in her entire life. She was glad she’d left, even if she had narrowly escaped a bad situation.

She was in the arms of a loving family now, and they would treat her right. She could feel it with everything inside her. Thank goodness she’d asked Mrs. Tandy for Susan’s last name. She shuddered thinking about how her life could have turned out if she hadn’t asked one simple question.

Sleep took a while in coming after those dreadful thoughts. But once she was asleep, it was all over. It was a quiet dreamless sleep. Well, sort of. She dreamed she was sleeping beside a too hot fireplace, but it was better than where her dreams could have gone.
