‘Not Nick, that’s for sure,’ Jen said, still feeling sorry for the guy. Matters of the heart could be so unfair sometimes. ‘What was your favourite date?’ she followed with, trying to keep the conversation cheery.

The guys exchanged glances and scrunched faces as they thought. ‘Tough one,’ Scott replied, clicking his tongue against the roof of his mouth.

James’ eyes lit up. ‘Probably the spa day. It’s not something I would have ever booked otherwise, but I loved it.’

‘Golf for me,’ Scott chipped in.

‘Aye, you would say that.’ James gave his boyfriend an elbow to the ribs.

Jen got the impression these guys would be fun to hang out with. It was a shame they’d never got to meet the other couples until now. She’d mention it to Annie – maybe next year the contestants could do a group activity too.

That was, assuming it would now be an annual event. Judging by the turnout tonight the Business Group would be silly not to.

‘What about you guys? Did you have a favourite?’ Scott asked.

They thought for a second, Holly answering first. ‘Cycling in Queens Park.’

‘Really?’ Jen said, taken aback. ‘My legs hurt for days after.’

‘Yeah, because you thought you saw a squirrel.’

The guys exchanged looks.

‘Long story,’ the women chorused.

‘I think cycling would have killed me,’ James said, gripping his belly and giving it a shake.

‘It nearly did me,’ Jen laughed. ‘Nah, I think cocktails were my favourite.’

‘You can’t say that,’ Holly scoffed. ‘You hosted it!’

‘That’s why I loved it.’

‘Have to say it looked better than our gin tour. My head was banging after,’ Scott informed.

‘So much to do in Shawlands, isn’t there?’ Jen said, suddenly very proud of her wee suburb.

‘And this is only the tip of the iceberg,’ Scott boomed.

A comfortable break in the conversation settled between the couples.

‘Right, I think we’re going to grab another beer before we take centre stage,’ James said, flinging his thumb towards the bar.

Scott did a little wave. ‘Was lovely meeting you both.’

Holly and Jen chorused their goodbyes.

‘They were so nice,’ Holly said, looking loved up.

‘They were, huh? Stiff competition, Hols.’ Satisfied there were no parents in sight, Jen closed the gap between them, kissing Holly lightly at first before diving deeper.

Holly bit her bottom lip when she came up for air. ‘What was that for?’

‘Just so happy to be here, with you.’ She couldn’t rest on her laurels, though. All Jen wanted to do was grab Holly’s hand and make a run for it. Instead she was trying her hardest to maintain eye contact while really watching her peripheral.Oh, to be a lizard.

Holly’s face split into a grin as she played with Jen’s hand. ‘I’m happy too.’

‘I know we have plans for our halves of the money, but do you want to go away somewhere, just the two of us, for a night or two? Won’t cost much.’ Since opening the shop, Jen had only ever been to France twice a year to see her parents. Time away with Holly would be a dream come true.
