With another gulp, sentences finally broke through the dam in her throat. ‘She wanted to chat. I told her I loved you. Then she kissed me.’

Holly was silent and Jen hoped that was because she was thinking it over and seeing sense. She wouldn’t cheat on her. She’d never felt this way about anyone, why would she throw it all away for a crappy kiss with her ex?

Their lips had barely touched for a second before Jen had pushed her away and stormed off.

Holly nodded and Jen’s heart swelled. It was going to be okay.

‘Right. She kissed you. Got it,’ Holly said, walking away.

Wait. This didn’t feel right.

‘You believe me, yeah?’ Jen asked, tumbling after her.

‘I can’t do this, Jen. I can’t do this.’

‘Can’t do what? Talk here? Please, just come back to mine.’

Holly shook her head, her pace increasing as she exited the park.

‘We’re done.’

Jen paused for a moment, the words like a shotgun to her chest. In an instant she was back in motion. ‘No, Holly, no.’ She took Holly’s shoulder and turned her back.

‘Jen, we’re done. Okay? We’re done.’ Tears were a torrent on her cheeks but her voice was firm. The harshness of her stare told Jen she meant it.

She watched as Holly walked away. Was it just her, or was the light fading? Jen gripped the tip of the wrought iron fence.

‘Holly!’ she screamed.

* * *

Chloe foundher sitting on the bench by the bowling club. She’d wanted to go home; it was just across the road after all, but Jen found she had no life left in her. All she could muster was the few short steps to the bench, where she pulled her knees to her chest and bawled her eyes out.

Thankfully, everyone that had passed ignored her. Sometimes living in a city had its benefits.

‘Pal, what’s going on?’ Chloe asked, sliding into place beside her and placing a hand on Jen’s back. ‘I’ve been looking everywhere for you.’

‘Holly’s gone.’

‘Gone home?’

‘She’s left me.’

‘Hold up. You’re going to need to back this up a little. Is this to do with Alison?’

Jen sniffed, pawing at her eyes to gain some composure. ‘She said she wanted to chat. Then she kissed me.’ She didn’t have the heart to go into detail.

‘Alison?’

‘Yep.’

‘And you told Holly?’

‘She saw.’

Chloe let out a sound somewhere between a whistle and balloon deflating. ‘Fuck.’ She rubbed Jen’s back. ‘So, what’re you going to do?’

‘I honestly don’t know.’
