Jen didn’t take the hint, though, and her phone buzzed again.
Holly cleared her throat before answering. ‘What do you want?’ Her tone couldn’t be more monotonous if she tried.
‘Holly,’ Jen sounded surprised she’d answered. ‘Please don’t hang up.’
Holly was silent. There was nothing worth saying.
‘You there?’
‘Of course.’
‘I’m still outside your house. I know your Dad said you wanted space but please, just let me come up. Let’s sort this.’
Jen’s desperation was clear and her raw emotion brought a fresh tear down Holly’s cheek.
She took a stilted breath before answering. ‘I need time to think, Jen.’
‘Hols, what’s there to think about? I didn’t do anything wrong.’ She almost kept it together but the final sentence was too much. Her voice shattered.
This was a mess. A huge, colossal, fucked-up mess.
‘I’ll call you when I’m ready to chat.’
Holly punched theend callbutton with her finger and flung the phone onto the bed.
She was braced for more tears, but none came.
She settled for lying on her back and staring at the ceiling instead.
Shona wasn’t like this.
When the truth finally came out it was because she wanted to be in a proper relationship with Keira. Holly was nothing but a hurdle. An inconvenience to overcome. There was no begging or pleading for her to stay.
But was Jen’s remorse enough reason to give her a second chance?
For once, Holly was going to put herself first.
