‘Just feeling good after last night.’

Chloe’s face said she wasn’t buying it. Pouches restocked, she headed back to the counter. ‘Need me to get anything else?’

‘Nah, all’s good.’ Jen paused as she handed a lady her change. She turned back to Chloe, who was now scrolling on her phone. ‘Did you not feel on a high after your date?’

‘I know you. And this is fishy. Although,’ Chloe said, an eyebrow raised as something caught her attention online, ‘Holly is one hundred per cent your type. She didn’t look like that at the event.’

Jen bit her bottom lip, attempting to suppress a smile. ‘She looked good, yes. And what exactly is my type?’ She laughed. ‘You’ve only known Alison.’

Chloe pulled anare-you-seriousface. ‘Pretty boho girls who look like they should play guitar and be able to braid their hair in ten thousand different styles. She’s probably an artist or something creative. Brown eyes. Brown hair. Vegan, or something quirky. Tell me I’m wrong.’

‘Okay, that’s spookily accurate. I’ll give you that. But I don’t do guitars. Not any more.’

‘So, guitar notwithstanding, was I right?’

‘Ish. I don’t know her well enough yet. She’s definitely not vegan, though. I know that.’

‘Good. Because good God, that photo of me and Ryan: it’s pure cheese. Have you seen what Annie posted?’

Annie flashed the screen towards Jen. It was pretty cringey. Chloe’s date had been at a local brewery and Annie had captured them leaning on a cask together. It looked like a Hallmark movie poster. Jen shrugged. ‘Cheese sells.’

‘You’ve got more likes.’

‘No, we do not,’ Jen exclaimed, certain Chloe was pulling her leg.

‘No, for real. Look.’

She was right; their picture did have more interaction. ‘It’ll just be because we’re two women. You know what it’s like.’

‘Yeah, have you read the comments?’ Chloe asked, pulling a face that said it all.Yikes.

‘No, I’m purposely avoiding that. I saw Annie had posted and left it at that.’

‘Some pretty creepy dudes on there.’

‘Ach, it doesn’t bother me. As long as they don’t come in here.’

‘And you’re going to hell. Sorry to break it to you like that.’

Jen snapped her fingers. ‘Darn. I did not see that coming.’

‘Don’t worry! Apparently the gay couple will be there with you.’

‘At least I’ll have someone to talk to. So, who’s top of the popularity polls?’

‘So far, Debbie and Nick are the ones to beat.’ Chloe held the phone out to Jen. They looked a nice couple. They’d got to go indoor rock climbing and the photo had them standing close, Nick’s arm around Debbie’s waist. Their grins said it all. They were the real deal.

‘Well, the games have just begun and all is still to play for. Debbie and Nick, you’re going down!’

‘As are you!’ Chloe said, playfully dancing towards Jen.

The next customer in line was creased with laughter.

She should text Holly and let her know to avoid the comments. Maybe pass on some of Chloe’s fighting talk, make a game of it. It felt nice to be a good mood. It had been a while.
