‘Detective skills are sharpening, well done.’

Holly elbowed her in the ribs and Jen felt her core do a flip.

‘Just making conversation, Jennifer.’

Jen pulled a face, waggling a finger at Holly as she attempted to make a noise like a wrong-answer buzzer on a quiz show. ‘Wrong.’

Holly looked confused. ‘Wrong to make to conversation?’

‘Wrong to assume my name is Jennifer.’

‘What? No. You’re pulling my leg?’

‘Why’s it so hard to believe?’

‘I just can’t think of many names it would be short for.’

They walked in silence for a few metres, Holly deep in thought. ‘I’ve got it,’ she said, looking smug. ‘Jenny.’

Another buzzer noise.

‘Jenna?’

‘Nope.’

Further silence.

‘Jenessa?’

Jen snorted with laughter. ‘Jenessa? That’s not a name.’

‘Alternative spelling of Vanessa.’

Jen shook her head, her cheeks starting to ache from smiling. ‘Surprisingly, no. That’s not right either.’

‘Please put me out of my misery.’

‘No, can do, sorry.’

‘Please,’ Holly pleaded.

‘Nope. If I did I’d have to kill you.’

‘What? No. You can’t tease me like that.’

‘Play your cards right and I might spill. Only my family and Chloe know the truth.’

‘As your girlfriend, I think I have a right to know,’ Holly retaliated, hardly able to keep a straight face.

‘It’s only been a week. You’ll need to stick around to become part of the inner circle.’

‘Challenge accepted.’ Holly coughed quietly, her eyes firmly on the MOT station they were passing. ‘So, this place we’re going to. Do you go there often?’

‘Erm, used to. Haven’t been in a while. It was just the first place that sprung to mind. With so many options in Shawlands, I don’t often need to travel.’

‘True. Shawlands has more bars and peri-peri chicken shops than I’ve had hot dinners.’

‘Feels like it, eh? But yeah, I used to work in Bar Orama. Doubt I’ll know anyone, though. It’s been about three years since I visited.’
