‘I’ll remember that.’ Holly couldn’t stop looking at the books, turning them over in her hands. How could anyone be so thoughtful? And to her, no less? Emotion swelled in her chest, threatening to creep up her throat and tumble out.

The door opened and a woman in her twenties entered, making a beeline for the fridge. Given their new rules, the company made PDAs preferable, and this customer had no expectations about what Holly’s role was in the shop. She planted a quick kiss on Jen’s cheek. ‘Thank you, again.’

Jen looked like the cat who’d got the cream, her eyes shining like diamonds, her smile equally dazzling. ‘My pleasure.’

‘I’ll just pop them in my bag, then I’ll be back.’ Holly nipped to the stockroom and let out a ragged breath. She was vibrating with the effort of keeping it together. A few more breaths and her muscles had finally calmed, as her emotions fell level.

Jen was ringing the woman’s purchase up as Holly returned. They weren’t destined to be alone, though, and another couple appeared. They didn’t seem to have any mug drama, thank God, and were quite happy to browse themselves.

Jen looked at Holly, a glint still in her eye. ‘Are you free tomorrow evening?’

‘Yeah. Well, after deliveries. How come?’

Jen focused on her finger as she tapped it against the counter. ‘One of my customers – turns out he fancies himself a stand-up comedian – gave me two tickets to his show. He’s worried it’s going to be empty or something. Would you go with me?’

‘Yeah, course—’

‘I’d ask Chloe but it’s not really her thing.’

‘Yeah, totally—’

‘Like, if you don’t want to—’

It was Holly’s turn to cut Jen off. She took a thumb and gently brought her jaw to a standstill, closing her yapping mouth. ‘I said yes.’
