‘You’d hope. You cold? You’ve got goosebumps,’ Jen said, stepping behind Holly and enveloping her in a hug, her head resting on her shoulder. ‘Never let anyone tell you you’re not good enough, Holly. Because I happen to think you’re pretty special.’

Jen’s words were like stepping out of the cold into a steamy shower. They tumbled over her, their warmth seeping into Holly’s skin and settling in her bones.

Jen nuzzled further into Holly’s neck. ‘Don’t ever forget how strong you are. Or how funny. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so much.’ Holly could feel her smiling against her skin. Everything tingled. ‘You’re wonderful, Holly. You deserve to be happy. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.’

‘I bet you say that to all the girls you bring up here,’ Holly said, only half-joking. Jen didn’t seem like a smooth talker, but no one had ever spoken to her like that. It was tough to let the words sink in without questioning.

There was no way Jen couldn’t feel how hard Holly’s heart was beating. Her breath wavered, trying to calm the pounding against her ribs.

‘Only the really, really, pretty ones.’ Jen’s chest shuddered against Holly’s back as she laughed. ‘Even as a joke that was too cheesy. Sorry.’

‘You’ve had better lines.’ Holly leaned back, savouring the feeling of having Jen behind her. She put her hands up, holding onto Jen’s wrists.

‘I blame Lovefest. It’s got me saying and doing loads of things I wouldn’t usually.’

‘Oh yeah? What else?’ Holly’s voice was nearly a purr, her body and mind lost in the moment.

But, just as quickly as it started it was over. Jen stepped away, reclining once more on the railings, her body swivelled in Holly’s direction. Despite the twilight, Holly could see she was blushing before she’d even spoken. ‘Well, if you’d have told me a month ago I would be on a secret rooftop, kissing a smoking hot brunette, I would have laughed in your face.’

‘See, you must be talking about your last conquest up here. We’ve not kissed,’ Holly replied, her eyes sparkling with mischief.

Jen smiled at her shoes. ‘That was my roundabout way of asking for permission.’ She moved closer, her lips almost touching Holly’s ear. ‘We’re meant to be couple-y in public, no? Well, we’ve got company.’ She darted her eyes to the two blokes smoking. In the fading light, it was impossible to know if the men had even seen them.

‘True,’ Holly agreed. ‘Those were the rules.’

Jen took her hand, leading her behind a chimney stack, the orange glow from the fairy lights the only thing illuminating them. ‘Still, don’t want them getting too excited.’ In one swift move, Holly’s back was against the chimney, Jen’s thigh between her legs. The gap between their lips closed. Jen stopped short, the smile on her face saying she was enjoying teasing Holly.

How could she go from saying she didn’t want a relationship to this? Holly’s body couldn’t take all this flip-flopping. It didn’t know where it was to pump blood from one minute to the next.

Jen held her position, her hands around Holly’s waist, her face enticingly close.

Two could play at this game. Holly nipped at Jen’s bottom lip before pulling back. ‘Does it not defeat the purpose, being hidden away?’

‘Perhaps. Just tell me if I’m to stop.’ With that she dipped her head, planting hungry kisses down Holly’s neck until she reached her collarbone. Her grip on Holly’s waist tightened, her thigh now as deep between her legs as the skirt would allow. Holly’s core pulsed, desperately wanting her to create more room, let Jen in.

As Jen’s lips found hers she shifted her hands from the loops in the blonde’s trousers, quickly hitching her skirt an inch or two higher. It was all they needed. Holly’s breath stuttered as Jen’s thigh rubbed against her centre, making her clit throb.

Surely this was too far? Friends didn’t do this. Was Jen drunk? Holly frowned as Jen’s lips worked in rhythm with hers, frustrated she was having such intrusive thoughts and not fully in the moment.Does the voice in my head ever bloody shut up?

‘What is it?’ Jen asked with a nervous laugh, taking a second to check their surroundings.

Holly ran her thumb over Jen’s jawline. Her desire was a wildfire, burning with reckless abandon, and if she didn’t call time now she was going to do something irreversibly stupid. She cupped a hand to Jen’s face, settling her fingers in the woman’s blonde waves.

Jen’s gaze melted into hers. She knew what was coming.

Words unspoken but sadly understood, Jen stepped back, flicking at the tip of her nose with her thumb, as if the motion would dispel the last five minutes from existence.

She cleared her throat as she pulled her phone from her pocket, her voice as composed and cheery as possible. ‘Photo with the fairy lights for Instagram?’
